ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Capital University women's tennis team opened the 2021 campaign with a win over the Purple Raiders of the University of Mount Union at the Alliance Country Club. The Crusaders were victorious, 6-3, following a big surge of success from the backend of the CU lineup.
Capital began the match with a 2-1 advantage coming out of doubles play when the combinations of
Kelli Wright-Lovell and
Josie Nichols plus
Karen Kanke and
Amy Wright-Lovell took wins on courts two and three. Nichols and
Kelli Wright-Lovell worked overtime to win court two, 8-7, in a tiebreaker (7-5), while court three went down easily, 8-0.
Mount Union tied up the team score, 2-2, with a win in the top flight singles, and also took court three with ease. However, the rest of the match belonged to Capital.
Kelli Wright-Lovell kept the momentum from her doubles match and earned the win on court two, 6-3, 6-2, over Emily Messina. Flights four, five and six all went to Capital with wins coming from Nichols (def. Sydney Scotford 6-0, 6-1),
Amy Wright-Lovell (def. Taylor Fultz 6-0, 6-1) and
Karen Kanke (def. Marissa Scobee 6-1, 6-3).
Capital will take the week to prepare for Ohio Northern University, whom they will host at Scarborough East Indoor Tennis Courts in Columbus on Friday, April 2. First service will take place at 11:30 a.m.
