MARIETTA, Ohio –  The Capital University men's soccer team battled with the Marietta College Pioneers but fell short in a 1-0 loss at Marietta Field on Thursday night. The loss drops Capital to 2-2-0 overall after its second straight defeat.
Early in the match, Capital put some pressure on the Pios with a
Nick Scharfenberger shot and save by Marietta goalkeeper Dalton Penquite. Mitchell Hughes then had a shot attempt blocked down near the midway point of the first half, feeding into Capital's dominant first-half numbers.
While the first half ended in a scoreless tie, Capital held a 7-4 advantage in shot attempts and 5-0 edge in corner kicks. The Crusaders put three shots on frame in the opening 45 to Marietta's one.
Possession was again dominated by Capital in the second and the Crusaders had opportunities to take a late lead. With nearly 22 minutes to go a feed from the near-side corner was placed on the back post but just narrowly mistimed for a streaking Crusaders converging on the goal. Two minutes later, freshman
Jack Kossoudji had an open look and launched a shot toward the upper 90, but Penquite made the diving save to his right.
Capital's best chance came with 10:45 to go in the game when Scharfenberger ripped a shot that rang off the post. Hughes came in for the rebound attempt but Penquite corrected his direction and returned to make the save and keep the match scoreless.
Marietta (4-0-0) scored the game deciding tally in the 84th minute when the Pios played the ball into the near-side corner, leading to a shot launched in from nearly 15 yards out. The shot deflected off of a Capital defender where then Reggie Grayek approached the ball and put his left foot on it to send it into the CU goal with 6:58 to spare.
Capital hustled in an attempt to level the score but of its two corner opportunities in the final minute one was cleared away and the second fell to the Pioneers.
Hughes led the offense with six shot attempts, three landing on frame. Freshman goaltender
Kellen Sargent made three saves, while his counterpart made seven and pitched a clean sheet.
Capital (2-2-0) will bring the show back home on Sunday, March 28 when the Crusaders host the Purple Raiders of Mount Union (2-1-0) at Bernlohr Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
