COLUMBUS, Ohio – Diaper dandy Jack Francisco is beginning to make a serious name for himself in the Ohio Athletic Conference as just two games into the season he now has three goals. The freshman phenom posted two goals in Capital University Men's Soccer's 4-0 win over Heidelberg University at Bernlohr Stadium on Thursday evening.
LIGHTNING (AND FRANCISCO) STRIKE TWICE
It did not take long for the Crusaders (2-0) to light up the scoreboard at Bernlohr Stadium. Following the turn of the first minute, Cap was awarded a free kick near midfield. He launched the ball forward, all the way into the box, and after bouncing it out to the outside, senior Nick Scharfenberger rolled out to play the ball inward. While Mitch Hughes went down the referee signaled to play on, and the pass from Scharfenberger found freshman Jack Francisco (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis Desales) on the inside locked and ready to fire. His shot stayed low and hit the wide open near-side of the goal, giving Cap a 1-0 lead just 1:16 into the match.
Still inside the first half, Hughes again fouled and reset quickly. His pass on the restart found Francisco's foot and then the freshman went to work on his defender. Working on the near side, Francisco had his man locked up and after drawing back and creating space he sent a rocket toward the top corner with his left foot and found the back of the cage to put Cap ahead, 2-0.
KEEP IT COMIN'
Hughes finally put his name in the score column when he notched his first goal of the season in the 55th minute. With the ball in the near corner, junior Jake Taylor clapped and called for a pass. Upon receiving the ball, he sent it back into the box and tipped ever so slightly off of a Heidelberg defender. Hughes snuck behind the defense and put the finishing touch on it so that it crossed over the line for goal number three.
Freshman Jack Kossoudji added Cap's fourth goal, heading in a pass into the box by Scharfenberger with 30:01 left on the clock.
WRAPPING IT UP
Capital outshot the Student Princes, 20-8, in the match, leaving few opportunities for freshman keeper Kellen Sargent (W, 2-0). Sargent made one save while Ivan Ludwig also made one in 5:07 of reserve time.
Nick Scharfenberger (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier) finished the evening with two assists.
Three cards were administered, all to Heidelberg, who also were tagged with 16 fouls to Capital's eight.
