COLUMBUS, Ohio – Capital University women's basketball (5-5) scored their highest point total of the season on Saturday night, tallying 79 to stave off Marietta College (6-6) on Senior Day to clinch the victory. Senior
Allison Roach made the most of her final regular season contest, posting a career-high 16 points to help lead the Crusaders to the win.
Both Roach and
Caroline Taphorn were honored before the game for their four years of service for the women's basketball team with a Senior Day ceremony.
POINTS APLENTY
- Roach kicked off the game with a bucket-and-one then Taphorn tacked on to give Capital an early 5-0 advantage as both seniors were active from the start.
- Marietta would come right back however, hitting a three-pointer, their first of 13 for the contest, and a jump shot to take the lead.
- Each side continued to trade shots gaining small footholds but neither able to take control as Roach connected from deep to put Capital up 17-15 at the end of the first quarter.
- One minute into the second frame, the three point line was open for business as Roach hit a shot which was answered from Marietta. On the next possession Brooke Ommert drained one of her own, only to have it immediately answered by the Pioneers.
- Capital then made its fourth shot in a minute and a half, forcing Marietta to take a timeout to regroup, the score standing 27-24 Crusaders with 7:30 left in the half.
- Shots continued to fall as the Pioneers were able to sway the momentum and take the lead at the 3:34 mark and build upon it by the halftime buzzer, up 44-39.
NECK AND NECK
- Marietta continued to hold their slim advantage, having it cut all the way down to one after an Erika Linder three point shot with 5:51 left in the quarter.
- The Pioneers then began to pull away, amassing an eight point advantage but Capital then exploded with a 10-0 run, getting points from four different players to end up down just one at the end of the period.
- To open the fourth quarter, Roach nailed another shot from deep to give Capital a two point advantage and they never trailed again.
- Roach hit two more shots and with a Kaylee Cyphers jumper, the Crusaders were able to shove the lead to six with 6:16 to play.
- Marietta's offense continued to take advantage of their opportunities, staying well within striking distance but Capital's offense was having none of it.
- Back-to-back shots from Ommert and Emma Burns sealed the deal, putting the Purple and White up by eight with just 38 ticks on the clock.
- The Pioneers still managed to hit their shots down the stretch, keeping the pressure on but it Capital did not blink and the team went home with the 79-74 victory on Senior Night.
KEY STATS
- The team scored a season high 79 points in the contest, shooting 50 percent from the three point line (8-16) and 48 percent from the floor (28-58).
- Roach showed out in her regular season finale, leading the team with 16 points on 6-16 shooting, including three three point baskets, and logging one takeaway.
- Burns, Ommert and Linder all made it into double figures with 14, 13 and 13 points respectively.
- Taphorn led all players, dishing out four assists on the night to go alongside nine points.
UP NEXT
- The OAC Tournament begins next week with all 10 teams competing. On Monday, March 1 there are play-in games scheduled between the seventh and 10th seed and eighth and ninth seed to determine who advances. Capital won't have to worry about those however as they have a date at Baldwin Wallace in quarterfinals on Tuesday, March 2 with times still to be announced. If they come out on top, the semi-finals will take place on Thursday, March 4 and to cap the whole tournament off, the championship game will be played on Saturday, March 6.
