COLUMBUS, Ohio – On the final weekend of the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season, Capital University Women's Basketball kicked off its weekend with a road trip to Marietta to take on the Pioneers of Marietta College. Despite jumping out to a 10-point lead with a strong start, the Crusaders dropped Friday night's contest at Ban Johnson Arena, 79-64.
FIRST QUARTER FUEGO
- In an act of sportsmanship, the game began with both teams swapping baskets, Capital taking the first. This was done in order to allow injured Marietta senior, Bailee Brooks, to score one final basket on the Pioneers' Senior Night.
- Capital senior Allison Roach scored 10 points in the first quarter, surpassing her career high for points in a game, all of which helped fuel a 17-7 lead before dipping below the four-minute mark.
- Roach went 4-for-6 from the field, including two triples, during this run.
- Marietta then displayed some fire of its own, scoring 10 unanswered points to tie the game at 17.
- Capital scored the final five points of the quarter behind a three-point play by Brooke Ommert plus two free throws by Caroline Taphorn. This helped Cap take a 22-19 lead into the second quarter.
SHIFT IN THE SECOND
- Capital rebuilt its lead back to nine points following an Erin Burns 3-pointer followed by Erika Linder's 2-point jumper.
- Marietta continued to pound the inside, putting Cap's post players in foul trouble and inducing six additional free throws, all of which the Pioneers converted.
- Capital committed six turnovers, limiting its offensive ability to score and leading to six additional Marietta points.
- Despite holding an advantage in shooting numbers, the Pioneers outscored the Crusaders, 19-12 in the second quarter.
- Capital was stuck on 32 points for nearly six minutes of game time while the Pioneers scored 15 unanswered points to retake the lead.
- While Taphorn scored the last bucket of the second half, Marietta remained in front, 38-34, at halftime.
- Capital's shooting percentages continued to drop over the course of the game from over 50 percent in the first quarter to under 40 percent in the fourth. Conversely, Marietta's marks rose up to 57.1 percent in the fourth quarter.
- Marietta held Capital to a total of 25 points in the second and third quarters, then outscored the Crusaders 20-17 in the fourth. With back-to-back 20-point quarters, the Pioneers continued to break away in route to a 15-point win.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Though Capital held a slight edge in overall shooting percentages, turnovers and foul trouble helped Marietta overcome the Crusaders. CU committed 21 total turnovers, which led to 19 Marietta points.
- Both teams shot 80 percent from the free-throw line, though Marietta took five more trips to the line for an additional four points more than Capital.
- The Pioneers lived in the paint, scoring 40 of its 79 total points in the post.
- Forty-four points came from Marietta's bench, as opposed to nine from Capital's reserves.
- Senior Caroline Taphorn (Harrison, Ohio/McAuley) scored 20 points on 7-of-8 shooting plus a 5-of-6 performance from the charity stripe.
- Allison Roach (Northwood, Ohio/Northwood) set a new career-high with 10 points, all scored in the first quarter.
- Brooke Ommert (13) and Erin Burns (11) also finished in double figures, scoring.
- Hillary Kroft led all Pioneer scorers with 18 points and was a perfect 7-for-7 from field-goal range.

Capital (4-5) and Marietta (6-5) will engage in a second meeting on Saturday evening inside The Capital Center at 6 p.m. Prior to the game, seniors
Caroline Taphorn and
Allison Roach will be recognized as part of Capital's Senior Day ceremonies.
Cap will be vying for a higher seed and a potential first-round home game in the upcoming OAC Tournament. They are currently the seven seed, which would grant the Crusaders home-court advantage in a Monday play-in contest.
