Women’s Hoops Defeats Ohio Northern in Down to the Wire Victory

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's basketball team played hard and came away with a down to the wire win over Ohio Northern, 48-45, to move to 3-4 on the season. Leading by as many as 13 in the second half, the Crusaders managed to hold off multiple Polar Bear runs to come away with the victory in the final seconds.

EARLY RUNS
  • The Polar Bears drew first blood but the Crusaders responded with two baskets from Caroline Taphorn and a three-pointer from Kaylee Cyphers to swing the lead to 7-2 at the 6:43 mark of the first frame.
  • Ohio Northern then went on a 6-0 run to take the lead back at 8-7 and keep things interesting.
  • Not to be outdone, Capital managed to score seven unanswered in the final 1:50 of the first quarter to gain a six point advantage at the horn.
  • To begin the second, Capital started to push the lead with offerings from Brooke Ommert, Cyphers, Emma Burns and Allison Roach to get the lead to double digits at 23-12 with 2:11 to play.
  • Turnovers by both sides limited scoring to close the quarter at 23-15, Capital to go into the half.

GETTING CLOSE
  • More turnovers to begin the second half gave both teams extra opportunities with the Crusaders capitalizing and pushing the lead to 13 with a three-point shot from Burns and a layup from Maddie Dougoud at the 2:36 mark.
  • The teams traded buckets to end the quarter but the Polar Bears were not able to break the double digit deficit with just 10 minutes to play.
  • Ohio Northern did manage to edge closer as the fourth quarter got underway making a few jump shots to cut the lead to seven.
  • Capital was able to stay afloat but untimely turnovers and missed shots allowed the Polar Bears to get even closer to within three after a made three-point shot with 47 seconds left on the clock.
  • The Crusader defense was able to stand tall and deny Ohio Northern an open look in the closing seconds and came away with the 48-45 victory.

KEY STATS
  • Taphorn led the team with 11 points and four steals on the night.
  • Cyphers was the second Crusader to score in double figures, contributing 10 of her own.
  • Burns buried three shots to total eight on the night, also reeling in six rebounds and swatting two shots.

UP NEXT
  • Capital makes the trip to Ada to take on Ohio Northern for the second contest of the two game set at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
