NEW CONCORD, Ohio -- The Capital University women's basketball team traveled to New Concord, Ohio on Wednesday night, facing the Muskies of Muskingum University.
Capital got off to a slow start on the road, struggling in the first quarter and scoring only 10 points. However, the Comets' resiliency was evident in the following three periods, outscoring the Muskies in the next 30 minutes. Despite a strong effort by Capital to draw even down the stretch, Muskingum would pull away in the final minutes and the game would end with the scoreboard reading 68-59 in favor of the Muskies.
Capital's shooting was not to be overlooked in this one. The Comets fired 45.5% from behind the three-point line. Overall, the numbers from the entire field evened out to a solid 40%.
Multiple Comets got their chance to make an impact with extended playing time, including lineup mainstays freshmen
Laney Murphy and
Nicole Flock who played 40 and 39 minutes respectively. Junior
Kaylee Cyphers and sophomores
Erin Burns and
Katie Burke also saw the floor for an extended period of time.
Kaylee Cyphers capitalized on her 26 minutes, scoring 13 points and grabbing four boards. She shot 4-of-6 from the field, good for 67%.
Nicole Flock brought her windex to the game, cleaning the glass for a game-high and career-high nine rebounds on top of a career-best 12 points.
Laney Murphy scored nine points, including three three-pointers. She led the team in three-pointers, shooting 50% from behind the arc.
Three Muskies scored 11 points each -- Taylor DeMassimo, Abby Jones, and Milayna Williams. Tanner Wirth added seven rebounds and five assists in the game.
The Capital women return to the court on Saturday, December 11, for a matinee matchup against the Blue Streaks of John Carroll University. Tip-off from University Heights is set for 1 p.m. EST.
