Men’s Hoops on Wrong End of Bout with Otterbein

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A big second half from the visitors led to the Capital University men's basketball team falling to crosstown rivals Otterbein University by a final score of 76-68 on Saturday afternoon.

Capital (4-3, 0-1 OAC), led 35-30 at halftime, but the Cardinals outscored the Purple and White by 13 in the second half to claim the win.

Cap's Tyler Schreck led the way for the hosts recording his fourth double-double of the year with 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Further adding to Schreck's stout play, the senior dished out five assists, swatted away four blocks, and had one steal.

Keandre Graves scored 14 points off the bench and contributed five rebounds as well. Alex Eyink was the lone other Capital player to reach double figures in scoring with 10 points. His efforts came on an even 3-of-3 from the floor (2-of-2 from three point range), and a successful pair of free throws. He added two rebounds and two assists as well.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The early proceedings led to a fairly even contest, but Cap began to separate themselves with 16:03 left in the first half. Otterbein led 8-7, before Cap put forth a 16-3 run that vaulted them to a 13-point lead with 9:13 left in the half. The run was pushed forward by a pair of scores from Dom Moegerle, a bucket from Griffin Doseck and flurry of scoring from Alex Eyink

After the run, Capital battled to hang on before halftime as the Cardinals closed the gap to as few as three points before the intermission. A jumper from Tyler Schreck with 47 seconds left in the half, sent the Purple and White to the break ahead by five.
Out of the break, Capital had the hot hand initially, building another healthy lead at eight points. Unfortunately, a four minute scoreless drought for Cap allowed Otterbein to re-take the lead -- their first since early in the first half.

Keandre Graves then got Cap going again with six straight points and gave the Purple and White some life. Unfortunately, after a brief back-and-forth exchange, Otterbein set off on another offensive run, claiming their own 13-point lead with just about five minutes left in the game.

Capital would fight to get back in the game, but would come no closer than six points, before eventually falling 76-68 in the end.

THE NUMBERS
After his big game, Tyler Schreck once again cemented himself among the best defensive players in the conference. Schreck now leads the league with 11.0 rebounds per contest, sits third in steals with 11, and is second in blocks with 15.
