DELAWARE, Ohio -- A monster evening on the glass for
Tyler Schreck and an 11-point effort from freshman
Alex Eyink lifted the Capital University men's basketball team to a 61-56 win over Ohio Wesleyan University in their season opener.
With the win, Capital starts the season 1-0 for the first time in two seasons when they opened the year with a win over Trine University. OWU slips to 0-1 to start their campaign.
As mentioned,
Tyler Schreck had a dominating evening on the glass, hauling down an immense 19 rebounds -- the most by a Capital player since Andrew Bolka had 18 in a 65-63 loss to John Carroll on February 7, 2015. Schreck also flirted with a double-double as he scored nine points. Further balancing his season debut, the senior added two assists, a block and a steal.
Alex Eyink, making his debut for the Purple and White, led the team with 11 points. The newcomer shot just under 50% from the floor and also added five boards, an assist, a block and a steal to his first collegiate stat line.
Joe Thompson added 10 points off the bench, shooting 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Balancing out the leading scorers were
Keandre Graves (nine points),
Kaleb Crawford (eight points), and
Ryan Suever (seven points). Graves also led the team in assists with four.
Capital built out an early advantage at 11-3, thanks in part to a 9-0 run to start the game. Freshman
Ryan Suever, scored an early five points across the run to get the Cap offense off the ground for the season.
Tyler Schreck had seven rebounds during the run to keep Cap in possession of the ball.
As the Battling Bishops' offense continued to struggle early on in the first half, Capital continued on their way, building another nine-point lead with 7:28 remaining in the first stanza.
Joe Thompson's second three-pointer of the game put Cap ahead 20-11 at the time. From there, though, the Capital offense began to settle as OWU started to find a way back into the game. Across the final seven minutes of play, the Bishops outscored Capital 13-11 to head to the locker room trailing by seven.
The halftime breather proved to be helpful for Ohio Wesleyan to regroup. After 10 minutes of second half play, OWU threatened to overtake Capital, getting within two points on two occasions. However, four quick points from Thompson on a free throw and a three-pointer pushed the Purple and White back ahead with some cushion.
With 2:46 remaining in the game, Capital was looking for some added insurance to build some added comfort.
Tyler Schreck short-armed a running layup, leading to
Alex Eyink swooping in for the offensive board and quick layup. On the layup, Eyink was fouled, giving the freshman a three-point-play opportunity. The good free throw gave Capital their largest lead of the game at 10 points, making OWU's chances even slimmer.
In conservation mode to preserve their lead, Capital struggled to add to their advantage, but possessed the ball, limiting the Bishops' shot opportunities to chip away at the deficit. A pair of late free throws by Eyink iced the game and led to the five point win for Capital.
On the OWU side of the ball, Henry Hinkle and Grant Spicer each poured in 14 points. Spicer and Tony Carter tied for the team-high in boards with nine each.
In the team statistics, Capital was out-shot 37% to 36%, but held a dominating advantage on the glass, out-rebounding Ohio Wesleyan 42-36, including an important 10-6 in offensive boards. On the offensive rebounding, Cap scored 12 second-chance points, while the Bishops managed just four points of added opportunities. Capital also took better care of the ball, having three less turnovers than the hosts.
Capital will look to continue winning ways as they travel to New Wilmington, Pennsylvania this weekend for two games at the Buzz Ridl Classic. First, on Friday, Capital will play the tournament hosts Westminster for an 8 p.m. tipoff. Then, on Saturday, Cap will play another non-conference foe in Thiel College for a 5 p.m. start time.
