GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Capital University women's basketball team was upended by Calvin University by a final score of 74-42 on Saturday afternoon.
The Comets loss sets them back to a 1-2 record during the young season. Meanwhile, Calvin improved to 3-2 with the win.
The Comets were led in scoring by freshman
Laney Murphy who secured a new career-best in just her third game as she netted 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting. She connected on two three-pointers as well.
Brooke Ommert was next on the team in scoring with five points, while four players all scored four points --
Nicole Flock,
Kaylee Cyphers,
Maddy Reese, and
Maddie Dougoud.
Cyphers led the team with five rebounds. Flock and Ommert combined for eight boards as well.
By all accounts, Calvin was the better team on the day, holding the statistical advantage in numerous offensive and defensive categories. Gabby Timmer paced the team in scoring with 20 points. Timmer and Baylee GalanBrowne each had eight boards for Calvin.
During the game, career debuts were given to
Maddi Weiland and
Curstin Giffin, while season debuts were made by
Katie Burke and
Gabby Ledbetter.
Weiland put in a decent effort off the bench, recording two points, three rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
The Comets will return to action on Monday, November 22nd. Capital will return to Michigan and play Alma College at 5:30 p.m.
