ALMA, Mich. -- The Capital University women's basketball team suffered their second straight set back at the hands of a Michigan opponent on Monday evening, this time, via a 65-58 decision at Alma College.
The loss drops Capital to a 1-3 record overall on the young season, while the Scots improved to 3-3.
Freshman
Laney Murphy kept her decent run of form going in the mitten state as she once again led Capital in scoring, this time with 16 points. Her efficiency was not as crisp as a fortnight ago, but Murphy managed a respectable 42% from the floor. She paired her scoring with three rebounds.
Demi Brewer was the lone other Comet to hit double figures in scoring as she swooped in 11 points on a 5-of-8 clip. She added four boards and a block to her performance.
Further players helping the Comet effort on the day were
Maddi Weiland (seven points),
Maddie Dougoud (six points, seven rebounds),
Nicole Flock (six points, six rebounds, three assists, one steal), and
Brooke Ommert (six points, six rebounds, three assists).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Comets used a strong first half of play to build a 35-29 lead at the halftime intermission. Both teams exchanged baskets across the early going of the first quarter and at times it looked as though the hosts might garner control of the game.
Alma's Taylor Sas hit a layup with 3:43 left in the first quarter which looked set the Scots on their way. Fortunately for Capital, a jumper from
Maddi Weiland and a layup from
Nicole Flock put Capital ahead with 1:51 left. Eventually, the scoring culminated with Capital ahead by one after 10 minutes of play after
Maddie Dougoud and Alma's Kendall Griffioen exchanged layups just before time expired.
After the first quarter break, Alma once again fired out of the gates looking to set sail and take back control of the game, going out to a 19-16 lead after just 1:18 of play had expired.
A layup from
Maddy Reese slowed the Scots tempo and eventually led to a two minute period of scoreless basketball. The brief scoring drought ended on a layup from
Demi Brewer that gave Capital the lead back. Buckets on consecutive possessions for Capital by
Laney Murphy,
Maddi Weiland, and
Maddie Dougoud extended Capital's advantage out to 27-22 midway through the second period.
Back-to-back 3-pointers from
Laney Murphy and
Maddi Weiland near the end of the first half pushed Capital ahead to 33-29, sending the game in Cap's control just prior to the intermission.
Gabby Ledbetter hit a layup with 35 seconds left in the half, giving Capital that much more cushion heading to the locker room.
Out of the halftime break, two jump shots from Murphy seemed to keep Capital in control of the game, but Alma had come out of the break with a chip on their shoulder and eventually tied the game up with 4:11 left in the third.
A layup from Taylor Sas with 2:31 left in the third quarter gave Alma back the lead for the first time since early in the second quarter. This time, the Scots would fail to relinquish that lead as they held on through the fourth quarter to seal the game. A 3-pointer off the hand of
Laney Murphy with 1:25 left in the game brought Capital to within three points at 61-58, but the desperation to finish the comeback ran out of steam. In an effort to get the ball back, Capital sent Alma to the line for six free throws in the final seconds to eventually lead to the final score at 65-58.
THE OPPONENT
Alma had five players reach double-digit scoring numbers. Taylor Sas led the team with 15 points, while Stasha Warchock was not far behind with 13 points. Kendall Griffioen managed a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Capital took better care of the ball this evening, having far fewer turnovers than their last two games, with 15 tonight. However, Alma punished the Comets for the turnovers they did have, scoring 18 points off the new possessions.
The Comets led the rebounding game with 37 boards, compared to Alma's 30. Of those rebounds, Cap also had the upper-hand on the offensive glass, 9-7. Once more, Alma took better advantage, scoring eight second chance points, compared to Capital's six.
UP NEXT
Capital will enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday this week, but will look to get back on track this Saturday as they stay on the road and head to Washington & Jefferson for a 1 p.m. tipoff.
