Men’s Basketball Can’t Maintain Halftime Lead at Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Capital University men's basketball team carried a 32-28 lead into the halftime break, but could not hang on as they fell to Kalamazoo College by a final score of 76-71 on Saturday afternoon.

The loss pushed Capital back to 3-2 on the year, while Kalamazoo improved to 2-2.

Capital had four players reach double figures in scoring. Kaleb Crawford led the team with 13 points off the bench, while Tyler Schreck (12), Ryan Suever (11), and Joe Thompson (10) balanced out the leading scorers.

Crawford rounded out one of his best performances of the season with six rebounds and three assists.

Schreck was just one rebound away from another double-double this season as he finished with nine boards. Schreck also contributed one block and one steal.

Thompson added five rebounds and six assists to his totals in the game.

Suever balanced out his afternoon with four rebounds, a block and a steal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Purple and White had to battle through the entirety of the first half, but eventually gained an edge with 2:55 remaining in the first half. A 3-pointer from Alex Eyink pushed Capital ahead 26-22 as the game neared halftime.

Both Capital and Kalamazoo then traded scores as a layup from Kaleb Crawford and a 3-pointer from Joe Thompson sandwiched a pair of layups from Kalamazoo's DJ Courtney. The plays sent the game to the break with Cap ahead 32-28.

Kalamazoo came out of the intermission as the aggressor, going on a 10-3 run to open the second half. Tyler Schreck's early layup was quickly forgotten as Cap went scoreless for nearly four minutes of play. A free throw from Kaleb Crawford stopped the slump, but the damage had been done as Kalamazoo put up 10 points during the same span of time.

The Purple and White fought back midway through the remaining time on the clock and eventually worked a six-point lead with 6:25 left to go.

The Hornets eventually made up the difference and leveled the score at 64-64 on a 3-pointer from Josh Decker. The bucket was then followed up by a layup from Ty Horky that eventually gave Kalamazoo a lead they would hold onto for the final 2:45 remaining.

THE OPPONENT
Ty Horky led the Hornets with 21 points, while Lukas Broadsword added 17 points. Broadsword and Josh Decker led the team with six rebounds each.

THE NUMBERS
The difference on the scoreboard proved to be in 3-point shooting. Capital shot the deep ball just 5-of-15, while the Hornets netted 10-of-23 from beyond the arc. Despite Capital scoring more field goals in the game, the difference in the score was inevitably due to the deep ball clicking for Kalamazoo.

Capital held an upper hand in rebounding and second chance points in the game. As a team, Cap out-rebounded Kalamazoo 37-29, which in turn led to them out-scoring the Hornets 15-8 on second-chance opportunities.

UP NEXT
Capital's next game will be the Sunday after Thanksgiving (November 28th) back home in the Capital Center. Cap will host Manchester University for a 2 p.m. tip off. The game will serve as a remembrance game for one of Capital's own, Zach Hollingsworth, a 2008 graduate, who recently passed away. A small ceremony will take place prior to tip off remembering Zach's life and his impact on so many at Capital and in the world.
