Women’s Basketball Can’t Maintain Hot Start; Fall to Illinois Wesleyan

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Capital University women's basketball team got out the gates strong across the first quarter, taking a 20-10 lead at the first period break. Unfortunately for Capital, the Titans of Illinois Wesleyan University powered through the remaining three quarters to eventually take a 75-67 win. 

The result slips Capital and improves Illinois Wesleyan to 1-1 records on the year. 

Capital got another big afternoon of shooting from Emma Burns who collected a game-high 21 points on an efficient 7-of-11 shooting, including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. Rounding out her stat line, Burns also has two rebounds and three assists. 

Demi Brewer finished the game with 11 pints off the bench. Brewer also added three rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block in the game. 

Laney Murphy reached double figures in scoring for the first time in her career, netting 10 points. She also added three rebounds, a block and a steal. 

Both Nicole Flock and Brooke Ommert contributed eight points in their starting roles as well. 

The story of the game came in two key statistical categories -- rebounding and turnovers. Illinois Wesleyan controlled the glass, recording 12 more total boards than Cap, including an astounding 18 offensive rebounds. The offensive rebounding helped lead to 19 second chance points for the Titans. Capital managed just 25 total rebounds in the game.  In the turnover realm, Cap coughed the ball up 29 times, leading to 17 points for Illinois Wesleyan. 

The Comets defense did force 21 Titan turnovers as well, recording 10 steals. Nicole Flock led the team with three swipes. 

IWU's Brooke Lansford scored a team-best 19 points. Mallory Powers had a game-high eight rebounds. Lansford also dished out a game-best five assists. 

The Comets will look to get back on track as they take to the road for their next four non-conference games. Their next game will be on November 20th at Calvin in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Tipoff in the mitten state is slated for 1 p.m.
