NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Capital University men's basketball team bounced back on Saturday evening, defeating Thiel College by a final score of 74-63. The win comes just one day after Cap suffered their first loss of the season last night to Westminster College.
After their first complete week of the season, Capital now holds a 2-1 record. Thiel fell to 0-3 with the loss.
Leading all scorers on the floor and leading Capital for the second straight game was
David Sanford who scored 17 points off the bench. Sanford shot an extremely efficient 7-for-12 from the floor. He also has a team-high six assists.
Two players netted 14 points for Capital in the likes of
Keandre Graves and
Tyler Schreck. Graves also added to his statline with five rebounds and a pair of assists. Schreck stuffed his statline for the game, helping to lead the team to the win. Overall, Schreck posted a double-double with his 14 points and 10 rebounds. Additionally, the senior had five assists, five blocks and three steals.
Both
Ryan Roth and
Joe Thompson also contributed heavily off the bench combining for 25 points between the two of them. Roth turned into a three-point machine, taking just eight shots, with all eight of them coming from deep. He cashed in on five of those efforts for 15 points. Thompson used a more well-rounded approach and scored 10 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Thiel controlled the tempo for much of the first half of play, keeping Capital at bay for most of play. Capital found themselves trailing by seven with 1:40 remaining in the half after A.J. Green hit a jumper from the paint.
The Purple and White responded in that final 1:40 by outsourcing Thiel 8-2 to close the gap to just one point at halftime.
Ryan Roth bagged two of his five 3-pointers in the run, including one at the buzzer.
David Sanford netted a jumper in between Roth's two threes.
Cap didn't waste much time out of the halftime intermission grabbing a lead that they would hold onto. With 4:54 gone in the half,
Ryan Roth splashed home yet another 3-ball that gave the team yet another lift. The bucket gave the team a lift, but ultimately it would be
Tyler Schreck's jumper with 12:10 remaining that would essentially put the game out of reach for Thiel.
A huge run late in the game pushed Capital's lead out to as many as 14 points with 2:36 left, on what would be Roth's fourth three of the game. A late layup from Thiel's Gudner Jean-Francois brought the final to 74-63.
