COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Capital University men's soccer team had an evening to forget on Saturday night as they were out-done by an incredibly efficient John Carroll University side. The Blue Streaks put 10 of their 14 shot attempts on goal en route to a 5-1 victory.
Capital's (7-4, 2-1 OAC) lone tally was scored by
Matt Scheper in the 53rd minute of play.
The first half heavily favored the visitors in possession and chances as John Carroll (6-3-2, 3-0) out-shot Capital by a margin of 9-2 across the first stanza of play. Of those opportunities, the Blue Streaks found the frame six times and managed to beat
Brady Frydl in goal twice on headers from Benjamin Hryszko and Nicholas Graeca in the 22nd and 38th minutes. The goals marked the first two times this season that Frydl conceded.
Out of the halftime intermission, the Comets looked to find a way back into the match. Just eight minutes after the break, Cap found a breakthrough.
Mitch Hughes served a great free kick into the box where
Matt Scheper -- up from the back -- got free and headed the ball past JCU keeper Connor Robinson, to halve the deficit.
Unfortunately for Capital, the goal would be the only on-target opportunity the team would muster in the second half as a 68th minute penalty kick for JCU all but settled the match. John Carroll's William Turrittin slotted home the PK to push the score out to 3-1.
Later on, in the 75th minute JCU removed all doubt when Jacob Hoover drilled a shot to the upper 90 off a feed from Michael Kelly. The final insurance tally came in the 82nd minute as Ben Brucken cleaned up a pass from Max Hess to seal the deal at 5-1.
John Carroll took just 14 shots in the game, with 10 of them finding the target, and five finding the back of the net. Nicholas Graeca led the team with three shots.
In the Comet net,
Brady Frydl stopped five shots, while Robinson was beaten with the only shot he faced on goal.
Capital will look to rebound with another home match on Wednesday, October 13th as they welcome Marietta College to Bernlohr Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
