BEREA, Ohio -- On Saturday evening, amidst an uncomfortable rainfall, the Capital University men's soccer team shutout the Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets by a final score of 1-0.
Capital (6-3, 1-0 OAC) put together their fifth clean sheet of the season while setting back BW to a 6-5-1, 0-1 record on the year.
In the first half of action, both teams had a fair look at finding a breakthrough. Fortunately for Capital, the breakthrough fell their way in the 43rd minute of play. Capital earned a corner kick, where
Mitch Hughes served a dangerous ball to the back post. A BW defender sent the ball back across goal, where freshman
Keegan Reese was on hand to dispatch his first career collegiate goal. Reese had only been on the pitch for 33 seconds before netting the all-important goal just before halftime.
The Comets continued to press in the second half, looking for an insurance tally, but were still out-attacked by the hosts. Despite the insurance tally never coming, Capital held on defensively to keep the Yellow Jackets at bay. BW out-shot Cap by a margin of 14-10 including a 6-4 advantage of on-target efforts.
Thankfully for Capital, the backline and goalkeeper
Brady Frydl were up for the task of keeping BW off the scoresheet. Frydl, playing in his second game, collected his second shutout while finishing the game with six saves. Further supporting the defensive efforts was a stout display from the backline consisting of
Bailey Lach,
Colton Daugherty,
Alex Moore,
Majd Awad and
Jarrett Puckett, among others at moments.
Zoltan Nagy collected three stops in net for the hosts, while Michael Tusick accounted for half of the team's shots with seven.
Capital returns to the road on Wednesday afternoon for a 4 p.m. kickoff at Heidelberg in Tiffin, Ohio.
