Football Overcome on the Road

BEREA, Ohio -- The Capital University football team had an afternoon to forget at Baldwin Wallace University on Saturday as they succumbed by a margin of 51-0.

The Comets (1-3, 0-3 OAC) created some of their own issues as they found themselves behind 2-0 after being tackled for a loss in the endzone less than five minutes into the game. BW capitalized on the free punt and scored a touchdown just moments later to push their early lead out to 9-0.

Again, the Yellow Jackets wasted no time in capitalizing on a Capital misfortune as just two minutes after making the score 9-0, they found the endzone again to push their lead to 16-0. The hosts picked off a Jake Woycke pass and quickly worked their way in to score.

The second quarter was much the same as the first quarter, except this time, Baldwin Wallace added four rushing scores in the stanza. The Comets found themselves trailing 44-0 at the break after the efficient BW offensive play in the second frame.

In the third, BW continued to rush their way down the field as they eventually tacked on a final score, this time on a 13-yard Reese Wamer run.

To make matters worse for Capital, the team found themselves in the red zone early in the fourth quarter, looking for a way to eliminate the shutout. Unfortunately, the Comets settled for a 23-yard field goal that was hooked wide left.

All-in-all, the difference in the game proved to be the BW rushing game. Of their 375 yards of total offense, 312 of them came via the run.

Meanwhile, Capital combined for just 215 yards of total offense, including 155 yards on the ground.

In the stats category, Drew Engle picked up the most yardage on the ground, rushing for 76 yards on eight attempts. Lance Matthews picked up 46 yards on the ground as well.

In the passing game, Trevor Harrison-Rawn, Ben Everson, and Woycke combined for just nine completions and 60 yards. Harrison-Rawn and Woycke each tossed an interception as well. Noah Meeker, Kameron Lee, and Justin McClelland all led the team with two catches each.

Defensively, four Comets had seven or more tackles. Mike Lauofo and Nick Fisanick picked up where they left off by leading the team with eight stops each. Kobe Swackhammer and James Curtis each had seven stops of their own. Malik Davis (1.0), Jack Blaisdell (0.5) and Ricky Scott (0.5), all accounted for tackles for a loss. Antonio Welch and Chad Davis each had a pass breakup in the secondary.

Kameron Lee punted the ball eight times for 268 yards. His longest punt of the day was 46 yards and he landed one inside the 20-yard line.

Baldwin Wallace had just about every defensive player on their roster record a tackle today, while Iyan Mitchell and Seikou Imani each recorded interceptions. Keegan Armitage and Jon Murray Jr. led the offense with two touchdowns each.

Capital will return to the gridiron at Bernlohr Stadium next Saturday, October 9th as they host John Carroll University for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.
