TIFFIN, Ohio – The Capital University women's basketball team earned its first win of the 2020-21 campaign, defeating Heidelberg University in Seiberling Gymnasium, 68-53. Sophomore
Kaylee Cyphers scored a career-high 20 points and was part of a defensive effort that silenced one of the Ohio Athletic Conference's top scorers on Saturday night.
DE-FENSE!
- Heidelberg's first half production was outdone by Capital … in the first quarter.
- Capital limited The Berg to just 15 points over the first 20 minutes of the game.
- The Student Princes shot just 2-of-12 from the field in the first quarter and made only five in the entire first half. Conversely, Capital shot matching 8-for-16 marks from the field in each of the opening quarters to take a 35-17 lead into halftime.
- The third quarter did not treat the Student Princes any better as they were limited to just nine shots attempts and one make (11.1%).
- Capital forced 13 turnovers over the course of the game, which led to 18 points. They also blocked three shots, two by Caroline Taphorn.
THE CYPHERS EFFECT
- Sophomore forward Kaylee Cyphers (Cedarville, Ohio / Cedarville) per forth the best performance of her young career, hitting 9-of-11 field goals which led to a career best 20 points.
- Cyphers went 2-for-3 from 3-point range, with seven of her makes coming from inside the arc.
- In addition, she collected five rebounds and one block in 25 minutes played.
PARKING THE BEAMER
- One of the OAC's top scorers and leading Heidelberg offensive threat, Brooke Beamer, was limited to just nine points one day removed from a season-high 23-point performance against Capital in Columbus.
- Beamer shot just 3-of-16 from the field, including one 3-pointer, and two additional points coming from the free-throw line.
NOTABLE STATISTICS
- Sophomore forward Gabby Ledbetter (New London, Ohio / New London) joined Cyphers in double digits, posting a career-high 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting while played nine minutes off the bench.
- Junior forward Brooke Ommert (Wakeman, Ohio / Western Reserve) led Cap with nine rebounds to go along with eight points and two steals.
- Capital remained very consistent through the entire game, scoring at least 15 points in each quarter.
- Freshmen Mimi Berete and Carrie Wyman both saw their first collegiate action late in the win.
NEXT TIME OUT
Capital (1-1) will take the week to prepare for a weekend set with Wilmington College (2-2). On Friday, February 5 the Crusaders will hit the road to play the Quakers at Hermann Court with tipoff coming at 7 p.m. The Quakers will then return the favor and play at The Capital Center on Saturday, 6 p.m.
