Ohio Christian Comes Back to Overcome Cap, 3-2

CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio – On Tuesday, Sept. 10, the Capital University volleyball team was one set away from claiming victory over Ohio Christian University. However, the Trailblazers stood tall on their home court and came back to defeat the Crusaders, 3-2 (16-25, 25-27, 25-23, 25-23, 15-11).

MATCH SUMMARY

  • Capital jumped out to a 5-1 lead early in the first set, but OCU was quick to close the gap and even take the lead late in the contest. Tied 23-23, two attack errors gave Cap the final two points to close out the first, 25-23.
  • Neither team gained a significant advantage in the second, though Capital broke set point twice to stay alive and Leighann Osborne tied the match at 25 with a kill. Caleigh Hamby delivered the set-winning blow in extra points to earn the 27-25 win and take a 2-0 lead.
  • The Trailblazers came back to tie the match at two sets each after claiming the third and fourth, each by scores of 25-23. Cap lost a five-point advantage in the third to allow the momentum to turn sides. The fourth set featured a late breakaway, allowing OCU to tie the match.
  • Capital led at the turn of the fifth set but once they hit the 11-point mark, the Trailblazers kicked it into gear with seven consecutive points to claim the set and the match.

KEY STATS

  • Three Crusaders found themselves in double figures for kills in the match, led by sophomore Miranda Jordan's match-leading 15 (15-5-45, .222).
  • Sophomore Delanie Nahikian delivered a season-high 14 kills while Leighann Osborne tallied 10.
  • Sophomore Jenay Kocsis tallied a team-best 29 assists with her counterpart, Emily Cooper, chipping in with 21.
  • OCU held the advantage at the net with 11 blocks to Capital's four.
  • The Trailblazers were paced by Dakotah Zaph's 12 kills and four block assists. Brooke Mazzocca led the team with 14 kills.

NEXT UP

The Crusaders, now 4-5 overall, will ready themselves for back-to-back doubleheaders at Hanover College as part of the Hanover Invitational on Sept. 13-14. Cap will play host Hanover and Trine University (Ind.) on Friday beginning at 5 p.m.
