Football Takes Road Loss in Alliance

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Capital University football team played on the road this Saturday and took a 66-0 loss at the hands of No. 2 University of Mount Union.

THE WAY IT HAPPENED

  • Mount Union scored on its opening drive following a 7-play, 62-yard drive that lasted 3:04 and ended on a three-yard touchdown pass between D'Angelo Fulford and Evan Weygandt.
  • Capital made a stop on Mount's next drive, allowing them just 13 yards on five plays to force a punt.
  • Capital quarterback Mitchell Machock threw the first of two interceptions to stop Capital's next drive, which led to a Purple Raider touchdown.
  • Mount Union then scored a touchdown on its next six possessions, five of those via the air.
  • After taking a 48-0 lead, Mount Union added a 23-yard field goal before the turn of the half. It was the first of six field goals that rounded out its scoring on the day.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Mount Union outgained Capital in total yardage, 669-101.
  • Capital garnered just four first downs.
  • The Purple Raiders forced three Capital turnovers. Mount Union fumbled twice, one caused by the Crusaders, but Cap was unable to recover either.
  • Quarterback Mitchell Machock went 7-for-20 through the air for 45 yards. Freshman Justin McClelland entered the game and went 1-for-2 passing for 10 yards.
  • Senior running back Evin Butler ran for 28 yards on 17 carries.
  • Sophomore wide receiver Mike Smith led the Crusaders in receiving for the third week in a row behind four catches and 27 yards.
  • Mount's D'Angelo Fulford threw for 213 yards and five touchdowns. Three of those went to his favorite target, Justin Hill, who accumulated 185 yards on seven catches.
  • Sophomore Wyatt Long and junior Blayde McCully led the Capital defense with six tackles each.

Capital (0-6, 0-5 OAC) will hit the road again next week when they ride into Ada, Ohio to take on the Ohio Northern Polar Bears (3-3, 3-2 OAC) on Saturday, October 19. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m.
