Capital Clinches Second Seed, First-Round Bye Despite Loss to BW

BEREA, Ohio – Capital University's women's soccer team competed against Baldwin Wallace University on Saturday evening at George Finnie Stadium.

Capital (9-7-1 overall, 6-2-1 OAC) struggled to get past a stout Baldwin Wallace (11-8-1, 5-4) defense, unable to get on the board despite taking 27 shots.

The Yellow Jackets received their first goal of the match from senior defender Kelly Gough in the 32nd-minute after receiving a feed from teammate Courtney Schutz.

Baldwin Wallace sealed the match in the second half as Marissa Fabrizi's shot found the back of the net. Sophomore forward Rachel Bender was credited the assist.

Senior forward Becca Cartmill (Temecula, Calif.) paced all players with eight shots. She was also one of four Crusaders to finish with three shots on goal.

Yellow Jacket goalkeeper, Sophia Weidner stood her ground despite being under fire all night, making 17 saves. The Crusader defense limited Baldwin Wallace to just seven goals, however five were on goal.

Hannah Klotzsche (Avon, Ind.) guarded the goal for Capital the whole match, making three stops. With the loss, her goalie record drops to 8-7 on the year.

Despite the loss, the Purple and White maintained a first-round bye and the Ohio Athletic Conference's second-seed in the tournament. Capital will host the winner of No. 6 John Carroll University and No. 3 The University of Mount Union for a semifinal round match on Thursday night.
