ADA, Ohio – In nearly improbable fashion, the Capital women's basketball team overcame an 18-point deficit and defeated the top-seeded Ohio Northern University Polar Bears on their home court, 66-54. The win propels the Crusaders into the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament championship game for the second year in a row where they will take on Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio this Saturday.

The early minutes of the game displayed little to cheer about as Ohio Northern opened the game on a 9-0 run. When Jenna Erwin marked up Capital's side of the scoreboard for the first time, the Polar Bears responded with an 11-0 run to take a 20-2 lead.

With seven minutes to go in the first half, Shelby Sheets (Fayetteville, Ohio) ignited the Crusaders' first signs of life, offensively, with the first of three two-point buckets she drained to spur a miniature run. With her leadership, the rest of the team followed to help turn the tide of the contest. Capital went on to outscore the Polar Bears 22-10 over the final seven minutes of the half.

Ohio Northern's turnovers not only stopped their scoring, but also gave Capital all the opportunity to completely erase the deficit within the first three minutes of the second half. After committing 12 turnovers in the first half, ONU opened the next frame with five consecutive turnovers before even launching its first shot attempt of the half. In the meantime, Colleen Fondessy (Fostoria, Ohio) began to make her impact on the game by giving Capital its first lead with a jumper in the lane.

The Polar Bears fought to regain the lead, but it never surpassed four points. After tying the game at 47 points with 9:17 to go, Capital went on a 12-4 run by getting back to its inside game where Sheets' jumpshot, Nina Napolitano's aggressive play to the hoop and a collection of Crusaders' ability to convert free throws willed them to never look back.

Napolitano not only excelled on offense by finishing with a share of the team lead with 16 points, but she also drew a tough defensive assignment in ONU's top player, Jordan Kimes. Kimes lead the Polar Bears in scoring with 12 points, but held to just six points in the second half when she was needed most.

Simonne Gage (Dayton, Ohio) was the Crusaders Napolitano shared her team-leading scoring effort with. Gage went 4-for-11 from the field and hit 8-of-11 from the free-throw line. Gage helped aid in causing a total of 23 ONU turnovers with a team-high five steals.

Fondessy, who came into the game for Kristen Thompson, came up big with nine points of 4-of-9 shooting from the floor. She also had two blocks, two steals and seven rebounds. Her seven rebounds tied a season high.

Of Capital's 66 points, 29 of those came off of ONU turnovers and 19 came from its bench players.

This marks the second year in a row Capital drew the No. 4 seed in the OAC Tournament and upset top-seeded Ohio Northern (20-6). Last year, the two teams met in the championship game of the tournament while this year's matchup came in the semi-final round. Ohio Northern finished this year as the OAC Regular Season Champions.

Capital has one more game to play to obtain the right to hoist the OAC Tournament Championship trophy for a second year in a row. They must match up with No. 3 Baldwin Wallace University who came back to beat No. 2 John Carroll, 64-51. The Yellow Jackets defeated Capital twice this regular season, including a 58-55 overtime thriller in Berea less than a week ago.

Tipoff for the championship game is set for 3 p.m. inside Ursprung Gymnasium.
