Box Score WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Capital University women's basketball team suffered a 61-52 defeat to Wilmington College inside Fred Raizk Arena, Wednesday night. The Crusaders are now 2-3 overall on the season.
Wilmington (4-0) jumped out on an 8-2 run to open up the game, but quickly closed the gap to a single point when Shelby Sheets (Fayetteville, Ohio) six of Capital first nine points. Wilmington responded with a second run, this time of nine points, to break open a 10-point lead, and held that lead all the way to halftime.
Capital struggled shooting in the first half, hitting just 26.3 percent of shots taken from field-goal range. They improved their shooting in the second half to 43.3 percent, but the deficit was too large to overcome. The Crusaders kept pace with the Quakers in the second half, but never drew closer than eight points.
Sheets finished with a team-high 18 points and as one of three Crusaders to finish with six rebounds. The senior also chipped in three assists and a steal while shooting 7-for-13 for the game.
Joining her in double digits scoring were juniors Kristen Thompson (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Nina Napolitano (Akron, Ohio) with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Freshman Chelsea Pla (Macedonia, Ohio) led the Crusaders on the boards with a career-high nine rebounds. She added six points to that effort.
Four Quakers finished with 10 or more points, including Spencer Robles' team-high 18 on 7-of-10 shooting. Brittaney Jefferson (12), Mary Moyer (10), and Ellie Kivell (10) joined her in that category.
The Crusaders (2-3, 0-1 OAC) will host the University of Mount Union this Saturday in the second game of a Capital basketball doubleheader. Tipoff is set tentatively for 3 p.m. from inside the Capital Center.
