Volleyball Drops Match at Heidelberg

TIFFIN, Ohio - The Capital University volleyball team fell, 3-1, to Heidelberg on Tuesday evening in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup at the Seiberling Gymnasium.

Capital (10-19 overall, 2-6 OAC) opened the the match with a victory in set one, defeating the Student Princes, 25-23, taking a 1-0 set advantage. The Crusaders then fell by scores of 25-22, 25-16, 25-23, dropping the conference road match.

The Crusaders jumped out to a 7-3 lead in set two before the Student Princes put together a 9-4 run, taking their first lead of the set at 12-11. 

The Crusaders then battled back, tallying three unanswered points to regain a two point advantage at 14-12. Heidelberg regained then swapped the lead again at 15-14, eventually tying the match at one set apiece.

In the early stages of the third set, it appeared both teams were in for yet another battle, before the Crusaders surrendered seven straight points to the Student Princes, who took a 17-10 lead. 

Heidelberg managed to increase its lead in set three to seven again at 21-14, before gaining a 2-1 lead in the match.

The fourth and final set featured a back and forth battle between the two teams, as the Crusaders came from down five points to tie the set at 15 points apiece, trading points with Heidelberg down the final stretch of scores.

However, Capital's comeback came up just short in the end, as the Crusaders fell by two points at 25-23.

Three Crusaders checked in with a team-high 11 kills, as senior LeAnna Cotton (Okeechobee, Fla.) and sophomores Hanna Ewart (Wichita, Kan.) and Mona Ratliff (South Charleston, Ohio), combined for 33 of Capital's 60 kills on the night.

Junior Katie Weilbacher (Grove City, Ohio), as well as sophomores Kristin Bender (Fremont, Ohio) and Kirsten Nickles (Loudonville, Ohio) each tallied seven kills apiece. Weilbacher also led Capital with 41 assists.

Senior Kelly Leonard (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the Crusaders with 30 digs for the match.

With the loss, Capital is now set to conclude its 2014-15 regular season campaign this coming Saturday with an OAC road match at Baldwin Wallace. First service is slated for 1 p.m. in Berea, Ohio.
