Florey Nets Eighth Goal in Last Ten Games, Ignites Win Over Marietta

COLUMBUS – The Capital University men's soccer team picked up its fourth Ohio Athletic Conference victory of the season on Wednesday night, defeating Marietta, 5-1, at Bernlohr Stadium.

Senior R.G. Florey (Westerville, Ohio) ignited the scoring for the Crusaders in the third minute of play, netting his eighth goal in the last ten games on a shot to the far post, past the diving reach of the Pioneers goalkeeper.

A total of 36 minutes passed before Capital tallied its second goal of the game on a cross on the ground in the box by junior defender Alexander Basiakos (Hilliard, Ohio), finding sophomore forward Cheyn Roux (Davidson, N.C.) for the score.

Capital held a 2-0 advantage at halftime, outshooting Marietta 14-2 in the opening half of action.

The Crusaders tacked on three additional goals in the second half, as Basiakos picked up his second assist of the day on a score by junior defender Cameron Bryant (Crestwood, Ky.) in the 49th minute.

Fellow junior and defender Josh Spaw (Cincinnati, Ohio) tallied his second goal of the year just over 15 minutes later, as sophomore midfielder Jacob Pulliam (Westerville, Ohio) placed a perfect ball in the box off a corner kick.

After Marietta tallied its lone goal of the match in the 87th minute, freshman forward Jacob Kovacs (Worthington, Ohio) posted the first goal of his Capital career off an the first-ever assist by classmate in midfielder Cheikh Tandiang (Columbus, Ohio).

Capital outshot Marietta 21-8 in 90 minutes of play, as freshman goalkeepers Trevor Funk (Dublin, Ohio) and Justin Niswonger (Centerville, Ohio) split halves in the game to help the Crusaders pick up their fourth OAC victory of the season. Niswonger recorded three saves in 45 minutes in goal.

A total of 27 players saw action in Capital's ninth win of the season.

With the win, the Crusaders are now set to host John Carroll this coming Saturday in their final home game of the 2014 campaign. The game will also feature senior day for Capital, as seniors Bobby Atkin, Austin Dent and R.G. Florey will be recognized post-game.

First kick is set for 2 p.m. at Bernlohr Stadium.
