The Capital University men's basketball team was unable to keep its scoring pace in the second half Wednesday, falling 82-72 at Marietta in an Ohio Athletic Conference contest in Marietta, Ohio.
After the Crusaders (7-9 overall, 4-5 OAC) shot 55.2 percent in the first half, the team cooled off in the second, knocking down 35.5 percent from the floor to shoot 45 percent (27-of-60) for the game.
The Pioneers (12-4, 7-2) shot 47.4 percent (27-of-57) from the field and committed just five turnovers in the affair.
Junior forward Andrew Bolka (Xenia, Ohio), sophomore guard Charles English (Cincinnati, Ohio) and freshman guard Curt Geise (Delphos, Ohio) tallied 13 points apiece to lead the Capital offense.
Junior wing Mike Augustine (Lexington, Ohio) added eight points and a team-best six rebounds. Senior forward Ben Jackson (Columbus, Ohio) and junior forward Michael Green (Dublin, Ohio) registered nine points apiece.
In the first half, both teams made at least half their field goal attempts as Marietta jumped out to a 41-40 halftime lead. Neither team grabbed a lead of more than a two-possession lead until the 7:12 mark of the period, when the Pioneers led 30-22.
Green and English knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the contest at 32-32 with 4:34 to play in the half. The Crusaders held their last advantage of the half, 40-38, following a 3 by freshman guard Curt Geise (Delphos, Ohio).
Marietta extended its lead back to eight at 52-44 by the 16:42 mark of the second half, and Capital was unable to get any closer than four the rest of the way.
Capital begins the second half of the OAC season this Saturday against Baldwin Wallace. Tip-off at the Capital Center is scheduled for 2 p.m.
