Crusaders Cruise at Rival Otterbein

Box Score

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Capital University women's basketball team enjoyed one of its finest offensive performances of the season Saturday, knocking down shots from all over the floor in a 75-58 victory at cross-town rival Otterbein in an Ohio Athletic Conference affair at the Rike Center.

Senior guard Cookie Geroski (Fostoria, Ohio) tallied a career-high 27 points to go along with a team-best eight rebounds for the Crusaders (7-5 overall, 4-2 OAC), who shot 43.5 percent from the floor and 75 percent (9-of-12) from 3-point range.

Geroski's previous career high of 22 points was also set at Otterbein, back on Feb. Feb. 9, 2013. On Saturday, she hit 8-of-14 from the field, all six of her 3-point attempts and 5-of-7 from the free throw line.

Capital last won at Otterbein during the 2009-10 season.

Sophomore wing Jenna Erwin (Springfield, Ohio) added a career-best 13 points to go along with six rebounds. Sophomore guard Simonne Gage (Dayton, Ohio) contributed with 11 points and a career-high nine assists, while senior forward Jamie Caton (Hilliard, Ohio) registered eight points

The Crusaders held the Cardinals (5-8, 1-5) to 37 percent shooting and converted 15 points off 17 Otterbein turnovers. Capital's bench contributed with 25 points.

In the first half, the Crusaders shot 48.4 percent from the floor and Geroski knocked down four 3-pointers over the final nine minutes of the period. After trailing 14-7 with 13:46 on the clock, Capital made a run to take a 15-14 advantage just over two minutes later following a 3-pointer by Erwin, who had eight points and a team-best five rebounds in the frame. The Crusaders completed a 10-0 run to lead 17-14 with 11:17 to play in the half.

Geroski's 3-pointer with 1:55 left in the first gave Capital a 39-32 advantage, its largest of the contest to that point. The Crusaders took a 41-34 lead into the locker room.

Capital started the second half with back-to-back baskets, grabbing its first double-digit lead of the game at 46-34 just over a minute into the period following a 3-pointer by Gage. That spurt started a 17-3 run to open the half as the Crusaders extended their lead all the way to 58-37 just over five minutes into the period.

Capital settled in from there, never allowing the margin to fall below 13 the rest of the way.

The Crusaders continue their five-game road swing Wednesday at Muskingum. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. in New Concord, Ohio.
