The Capital University volleyball team rebounded from a three-set loss earlier Friday to defeat Buffalo State 25-22, 25-17, 19-25, 26-28, 15-10 in the nightcap of the team's first day of competition at the Marcia French Memorial Invitational at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio.
The Crusaders (3-4 overall) committed just two attack errors in the clinching set against the Bengals (1-4) and scored over half of their points (8) on kills.
Sophomore middle hitter Olivia Arledge (Chillicothe, Ohio) tallied 12 kills to lead the offense. Freshmen Mona Ratliff (South Charleston, Ohio) and Courtney McCracken (Newark, Ohio) posted 10 apiece and combined for five in the final set.
Freshman middle hitter Kristen Bender (Fremont, Ohio) added six blocks, while sophomore Natalie Briggs (Pataskala, Ohio) paced a balanced Capital defense with 28 digs. Three others posted at least 10 each.
Sophomore Katie Weilbacher (Grove City, Ohio) contributed with 26 assists and three service aces.
In the Crusaders' opening match, Carnegie Mellon (5-1) took all three sets in a 25-19, 25-12, 25-15 Capital setback.
Freshman middle hitter Hanna Ewart (Wichita, Kan.) led the Crusaders with seven kills. Briggs and Weilbacher registered 12 and 10 digs, respectively, to lead the defense. McCracken posted five kills and seven digs.
Capital continues tournament play tomorrow against Medaille (N.Y.) at 12 p.m. before taking on Case at 2 p.m. to wrap up competition in Cleveland.
