Women's Soccer Extends Unbeaten Streak to Five

Box Score

The Capital University women's soccer team won its fourth straight contest Saturday, defeating Defiance 4-0 in a non-conference affair at Bernlohr Stadium.

The Crusaders (4-1-1 overall), who are unbeaten since opening the season with a 3-2 setback against then-No. 5 Carnegie Mellon (Pa.), controlled possession from the early going and didn't look back.

Junior midfielder Jessie Cermelj (Westerville, Ohio) totaled a pair of goals for Capital, which outshot the Yellow Jackets (2-3-1) by a 19-0 margin.

"We're pleased to remain undefeated at home and pleased to continue the trend of multiple players finding the score sheet," Capital coach Chris Kouns said. "This was a good learning opportunity … Defiance was very disciplined in keeping 10 players behind the ball at all times."

Senior midfielder Katie Freshour (North Canton, Ohio) supplied all the offense Capital would need, sending a header into the back of the net for her first goal of the season in the 39th minute. Sophomore midfielder Allison Mervau (Micanopy, Fla.) assisted on the play, sending a corner kick perfectly in front of the net.

The Crusaders padded their lead in the 73rd when freshman forward Monique Hanayik (Sidney, Ohio) slipped the ball off a defender and into the back of the net off of a pass from senior forward Madison Palmer (Spring Arbor, Mich.). The tally was Hanayik's second of the year.

Cermelj rounded out Capital's scoring efforts with a header off another Mervau assist in the 84th minute, then scored on a pass from freshman Taylor Atkins (Bethel, Ohio) with just two seconds on the clock for the final margin.

Senior Maggie Donnellan (Cincinnati, Ohio) and sophomore Kim Leitch (Rocky River, Ohio) combined for the shutout in goal.

The Crusaders visit local rival Wittenberg Wednesday for a 7 p.m. non-conference match.

"This is a win to enjoy today, but that's as far as it goes," Kouns said. "With Wittenberg Wednesday, the season marches on and so should our journey to improvement."
