The Capital University volleyball team won for the third time in its last four matches Wednesday, defeating Ohio Wesleyan 25-19, 25-13, 19-25, 25-20 in a non-conference contest in Delaware, Ohio.
The Crusaders (5-5 overall) hit .257 for the match and three players tallied 10 or more kills each. Freshman middle hitter Mona Ratliff (South Charleston, Ohio) recorded a team-best 13 kills to go along with a pair of service aces and four blocks.
Sophomore middle hitter Olivia Arledge (Chillicothe, Ohio) contributed with 12 kills and four blocks, while freshman outside hitter Courtney McCracken (Newark, Ohio) added 10 kills and seven digs.
Capital broke open an evenly played first set midway through, turning a 10-10 tie into a 19-12 advantage and hanging on for a first-set triumph. In the second, the Crusaders jumped out to an 8-0 advantage riding McCracken's serve and didn't look back.
The Battling Bishops (5-4) stole the momentum in the third, taking a 3-0 lead and taking control late in the set with four straight points to gain separation from a one-point lead.
Trailing 11-5 in the fourth, Capital ran off six straight points on Ratliff's serve to even the score at 11-11. After the two teams traded points, the Crusaders took a 20-17 lead on a quick three-point run and held on to take the set and the match.
Sophomore setter Katie Weilbacher (Grove City, Ohio) posted 26 assists and nine digs, while junior setter Marissa Price (Tiffin, Ohio) tallied 13 assists and 11 digs. Junior defensive specialist Kelly Leonard (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the defense with 22 digs.
Freshman middle hitter Kristin Bender (Fremont, Ohio) registered six of Capital's 18 total blocks.
Capital returns to play at this weekend's Pizza Hut Invitational at Manchester University. The Crusaders take on Anderson (Ind.) and Adrian (Mich.) at 5 and 7 p.m., respectively, to begin tournament play on Friday.
