Box Score
The Capital University men's basketball team gave itself a chance to win late in a road game Saturday but fell just short in a 59-58 setback at Baldwin Wallace in an Ohio Athletic Conference contest in Berea, Ohio.
The Crusaders (3-3 overall, 1-1 OAC) had the ball down by one point with under 30 seconds to play. After two timeouts, Capital was unable to get a shot off prior to the buzzer and was dealt its first conference loss since last season on Jan. 19, also a game at Baldwin Wallace.
Sophomore guard AJ Dixon (Hilliard, Ohio) led all scorers with a career-high 20 points and a game-high five assists. Junior guard Adam Blake (Kingston, Ohio) and junior wing Mike Augustine (Lexington, Ohio) each contributed with nine points.
Junior forward Daniel Ocke (Sidney, Ohio) filled the box score with six points, six rebounds and two blocks. Senior forward Ben Jackson (Columbus, Ohio) and junior forward Andrew Bolka (Xenia, Ohio) tallied seven rebounds apiece.
After a 3-point play put the Yellow Jackets (5-1, 2-0) ahead 56-55 with 2:15 on the clock, a free throw by Blake tied the game with 1:38 to play. The Crusaders then forced a Baldwin Wallace turnover and converted on the other end, as junior Mike Augustine (Lexington, Ohio) connected on a jumper to give Capital a 58-56 lead at the 1:02 mark.
The Yellow Jackets wound down the clock at the other end and knocked down a 3-pointer to take the lead for good with 27 seconds remaining.
For the game, Capital shot 36.5 percent from the floor, while Baldwin Wallace knocked down 48.8 percent of its attempts.
The game featured nine ties and 12 lead changes against two of the top three teams in last year's league standings.
In the first half, the Crusaders trailed by as many as 13 points thanks to a four-minute scoring drought until the 2:52 mark, when Dixon hit a 3-pointer to start a 13-3 run to close the frame. Junior forward Daniel Ocke (Sidney, Ohio) knocked down a 3-pointer to close the run and cut the Captial deficit to 34-31 heading into the locker room.
The Crusaders shot just 37 percent (11-of-30) compared to Baldwin Wallace's 70 percent (14-of-20) in the frame, but gathered five offensive rebounds and held the Yellow Jackets to just a pair of free throws.
Capital returns to non-conference play Thursday at home against Denison. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the Capital Center.
