BEREA, Ohio – The Capital University volleyball team fought back from a two-set deficit but was unable to come all the way back Saturday, suffering a 25-20, 25-17, 22-25, 21-25, 15-7 setback at Baldwin Wallace in an Ohio Athletic Conference match.
The Crusaders (14-13 overall, 2-5 OAC) took a pair of closely contested sets after dropping the first two, combining for 32 kills in the two winning frames. Capital totaled three kills against four attack errors in the fifth and deciding set.
The Yellow Jackets (10-16, 3-4) hit .321 in the fifth, taking six of the last seven points to finish off the Crusaders.
Freshman outside hitter Courtney McCracken (Newark, Ohio) led Capital with a match-high 17 kills along with 24 digs. Freshman outside hitter Hanna Ewart (Wichita, Kan.) registered 13 kills, while freshman middle hitter Mona Ratliff (South Charleston, Ohio) contributed with 11 kills and three blocks.
Freshman right side hitter Olivia Arledge (Chillicothe, Ohio) posted nine kills, seven digs and three blocks. Sophomore setter Katie Weilbacher (Grove City, Ohio) tallied six kills, 36 assists and 10 digs.
Junior libero Kelly Leonard (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded a match-high 33 digs as well as three service aces to lead the defense.
After falling behind early in the opening two sets, Capital overcame another early deficit in the third. Baldwin Wallace led 12-7 before the Crusaders ran off five straight points on McCracken's serve to make it 15-15. Capital made another run, this time on Leonard's serve, late in the set to take the third.
In the fourth, the Crusaders recovered after trailing 10-5, taking an 11-10 advantage following a long spurt on Weilbacher's serve. The two teams traded points before Capital won the final two to force the fifth set, when Baldwin Wallace took a commanding lead en route to victory following a 4-4 tie.
The Crusaders play their final home match of the regular season Tuesday against Muskingum. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. at the Capital Center.
