Capital Outlasted at Baldwin Wallace

Box Score

BEREA, Ohio – The Capital University football team controlled tempo for one half of football Saturday but was eventually defeated 28-12 at Baldwin Wallace in an Ohio Athletic Conference contest at George Finnie Stadium's Tressel Field.

The Crusaders (1-6 overall, 1-5 OAC) rushed for 216 yards but surrendered 328 to the Yellow Jackets. Overall, Baldwin Wallace (5-2, 4-2) totaled 383 yards against 312 for Capital, which held the ball for more than 20 minutes of the first half but just under 10 minutes in the second.

Senior slot back Alex Coleman (Columbus, Ohio) was one of four Capital players with more than 35 yards rushing in the contest, pacing the team with 52 yards on eight carries. Freshman quarterback Chase Longwell (Hilliard, Ohio) rushed for 43 yards and passed for 96.

Freshman defensive back Dallas Banks (Crestwood, Ky.) tallied 11 tackles to lead the defense. Senior defensive back Domenic Hebebrand (Hinckley, Ohio) and junior defensive lineman Gene Rucker (Marion, Ohio) recorded 10 stops apiece, while junior defensive back Anthony Cicione (Akron, Ohio) posted a pair of interceptions.

Senior wide receiver Jacob Batcho (Massillon, Ohio) added three receptions for 35 yards.

After a fumble recovery on a Yellow Jackets running play opened scoring just under five minutes into the contest, Capital got on the board when sophomore slot back Jake Breakey (Pickerington, Ohio) took a pitch to the left and rushed in from nine yards out on fourth-and-1 to cap an 11-play, 75-yard drive. Coleman highlighted the drive with a 22-yard scamper deep into BW territory. The Crusaders trailed 7-6 with 5:09 to play in the first quarter after junior kicker Travis Bosanac's PAT attempt was blocked.

The Yellow Jackets upped their lead to 14-6 on a 19-yard pass play with 12:31 to play in the second quarter.

After a Capital punt, Cicione registered his first interception of the contest, setting up the Crusaders' eight-play, 58-drive that concluded with a 2-yard touchdown run by freshman b-back Brent Walton (Pickerington, Ohio) with 5:35 to play in the period. Longwell found senior wide receiver Joey Siefer (Sylvania, Ohio) to keep the drive alive on third-and-14 and put Capital within striking distance.

Cicione posted his second pick of the game on a Baldwin Wallace hail Mary attempt with three seconds to play in the first half.

After the Yellow Jackets opened the second half with a touchdown drive, the Crusaders were forced to punt on consecutive drives before Baldwin Wallace tallied again to make it 28-12 with 12:21 to play in the affair.

After the defense forced the Yellow Jackets to punt, Capital got the ball with just over eight minutes to play and moved into the red zone, helped by consecutive pass plays of 20 yards or more from Longwell to Walton and Batcho. Three players later, Longwell tried for Batcho in the corner of the end zone on fourth down, but the pass fell incomplete.

The Crusaders wrap up the road portion of the regular season next Saturday at cross-town rival Otterbein. Kickoff is slated for 1:30 p.m. in Westerville.
