The Capital University volleyball team picked up its first road win of the Ohio Athletic Conference season Tuesday, downing Marietta 25-11, 25-16, 25-15 in Marietta, Ohio.
The Crusaders (14-12 overall, 2-4 OAC) hit .215 in the match while holding the Pioneers to -.019 and forcing 25 attack errors. Capital posted nine service aces, compared to one for Marietta.
Freshmen Courtney McCracken (Newark, Ohio), Hanna Ewart (Wichita, Kan.) and Mona Ratliff (South Charleston, Ohio) registered seven kills apiece to lead a balanced offensive attack. Freshman middle hitter Kristin Bender (Fremont, Ohio) added five kills and a team-high four blocks.
Junior libero Kelly Leonard (Cincinnati, Ohio) totaled 21 digs and two service aces. Sophomore defensive specialist Natalie Briggs (Pataskala, Ohio) led the team with three aces.
Sophomore setter Katie Weilbacher (Grove City, Ohio) and junior setter Marissa Price (Tiffin, Ohio) combined for 24 assists and 12 digs.
The Crusaders took a big lead midway through the first set, making a 7-0 run on Price's serve to take a 15-6 advantage. Capital extended its lead later in the set, winning seven of the last eight points in the frame.
In the second, the Pioneers (11-15, 1-5) erased the Crusaders' early lead, but Capital took control of the set with a 9-0 spurt, including two kills each by McCracken and Ratliff and a pair of aces by Briggs.
The Crusaders took control of the third set early on, taking an 8-3 advantage and not looking back.
Capital resumes league play Saturday at Baldwin Wallace. Match time is set for 12 p.m. in Berea, Ohio.
