COLUMBUS – The Capital University volleyball team had momentum in the final two sets of its match against ninth-ranked Mount Union Saturday but was outlasted 25-12, 25-17, 25-18 in an Ohio Athletic Conference match at the Capital Center.
Sophomore right side hitter Olivia Arledge (Chillicothe, Ohio) led the Crusaders (13-12 overall, 1-4 OAC) with 10 kills to go along with six digs. Freshman outside hitter Hanna Ewart (Wichita, Kan.) and freshman middle hitter Mona Ratliff (South Charleston, Ohio) tallied five kills apiece.
Sophomore setter Katie Weilbacher (Grove City, Ohio) totaled 21 assists and seven digs. Junior libero Kelly Leonard (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the back row with 29 digs, while Ratliff totaled two blocks to lead the front row defense.
Capital held the Purple Raiders (24-3, 5-0) to a .179 hitting percentage, well below Mount Union's season percentage of over .250 entering the match. On the flip side, the Crusaders were held to a .015 percentage.
Mount Union forced two Capital timeouts early in the first set, taking an 11-4 advantage just prior to the second timeout. The Purple Raiders extended their advantage during the frame and took a 1-0 lead.
In the second, the Crusaders rode Weilbacher's serve to a 4-0 lead before Mount Union rallied back to tie the match at 9-9 and eventually take the lead for good.
A 5-0 run by the Purple Raiders midway through the third set broke a 9-9 tie and proved to be the difference in the period.
Capital plays three of its next four matches on the road to conclude the 2013 regular season. The Crusaders visit Marietta Tuesday at 7 p.m. to start the stretch.
