COLUMBUS – The Capital University volleyball team posted its first Ohio Athletic Conference win Tuesday night, defeating Wilmington 25-19, 25-16, 25-19 at the Capital Center.
Freshman outside hitter Hanna Ewart (Wichita, Kan.) led the Crusaders (13-11 overall, 1-3 OAC) with 12 kills on 25 attacks with no errors, good for a .480 hitting percentage. Freshman outside hitter Courtney McCracken (Newark, Ohio), freshman middle hitter Kristin Bender (Fremont, Ohio) and junior outside hitter Marissa Price (Tiffin, Ohio) tallied six kills apiece. Bender added a team-best two blocks.
Sophomore defensive specialist Natalie Briggs (Pataskala, Ohio) led the defense with 13 digs, while junior libero Kelly Leonard (Cincinnati, Ohio) contributed with 10 digs.
Sophomore setter Katie Weilbacher (Grove City, Ohio) registered 29 assists and nine digs.
After winning a back-and-forth first set, Capital jumped out to a 10-1 advantage in the second on the serve of Briggs. The Quakers (1-14, 0-4) reduced the margin to seven later in the set, but the Crusaders closed out the set on a Weilbacher kill.
In the third, the teams fought to a 17-17 tie before Capital took control of the match with a 4-0 on the serve of freshman middle hitter Mona Ratliff (South Charleston, Ohio). The teams exchanged points before the Crusaders took the final two points to clinch the set and match.
Capital resumes OAC play this Saturday against No. 9 Mount Union. First serve is slated for 4 p.m. at the Capital Center.
