The Capital University women's soccer team controlled play and was rewarded late in the contest Saturday with a 1-0 victory at Heidelberg in an Ohio Athletic Conference showdown in Tiffin, Ohio.
Freshman Mariah Richards (Canton, Ohio; at right) posted her second game-winning goal of the season in the 85th minute, a shot from outside of the box on an assist from junior Katie Freshour (North Canton, Ohio).
The Crusaders (7-5-1 overall, 2-0-1), who are now unbeaten in their last three games, outshot the 'Berg 18-4 and owned a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks. Capital had three corner kicks in the first 15 minutes of the affair but were unable to take advantage.
"We felt like we played really well for the first 25 minutes of the game," Capital coach Chris Kouns said. "We had great possession going, but for some reason backed off and allowed them to stay in the game. I give Heidelberg a lot of credit, they fought to the end and made it difficult, but we eventually broke through."
Heidelberg dropped to 2-7-1 overall and 1-2 in the league with the loss.
Junior goalkeeper Maggie Donnellan (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded her second shutout of the year with three saves. Freshman Jamie Murray (West Palm Beach, Fla.) added five shots, including three on goal.
"Any win on the road in the conference is great," Kouns said. "We had a great week at 2-0, but have to work this week for the consistency, heart, effort and fight we had against Ohio Northern (last Wednesday)."
Capital returns to action this Wednesday against Wilmington. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m. at Bernlohr Stadium.
