The Capital University men's basketball team continued its winning ways Saturday with an 83-71 victory at John Carroll in an Ohio Athletic Conference match-up in University Heights, Ohio.

Junior forward Jared Cashen (Norwalk, Ohio) posted a career-high 16 points (12 in the first half) on 6-of-6 shooting to go along with a team-best six rebounds to lead the Crusaders (6-4 overall, 4-0 OAC), who won at John Carroll for the first time since 2007.

"'Cash' played real aggressive today, and really well on defense," Capital coach Damon Goodwin said. "He was more physical … he definitely came out of his shell a little bit and played how we expect him to play."

Senior guard Tim Congrove (Circleville, Ohio) knocked down all five of his field goals, all 3-point attempts, to finish with 15 points off the bench. Senior wing Michael Sommer (Celina, Ohio) added 15 points, four assists, three steals and a pair of blocked shots.

Capital held the Blue Streaks (4-4, 2-2) to 40.3 percent shooting while making 17-of-24 of its own attempts (70.8 percent) in the second half.

"We didn't allow them to get easy scoring opportunities off of turnovers," Goodwin said. "So much of John Carroll's offense is predicated on playing off turnovers, which lead to 3-on-2 and 2-on-1 opportunities."

John Carroll led through the first 12 minutes, taking a 22-15 lead at the 8:42 mark before the Crusaders posted a 14-2 run, capped by a lay-up by senior guard Mitch Westerheide (Ft. Loramie, Ohio), to take a 29-24 advantage with 2:32 left in the period.

Capital extended its lead to 11 just over five minutes into the second when freshman AJ Dixon (Hilliard, Ohio) knocked down a 3. The Crusaders continued to extend the margin, leading by as many as 21 as late as the 7:54 mark of the half. Sommer and Congrove each registered 12 points in the period to protect the Capital lead.

"We shot it well in the second half after getting off to a bad start," Goodwin said. "Tim did some nice things … they just kept helping off drives and we found him open. He's one of those guys who can catch fire."

As a team, the Crsuaders made 10-of-19 from 3-point range and 29-of-50 (58 percent) of their total field goals.

Capital plays its final game of the 2012 calendar year this Tuesday against Wilmington. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at the Capital Center.
