The Capital University men's basketball team (2-4) fell at home to the visiting Ohio Wesleyan Bishops (4-1) by a final score of 64-53 Wednesday night at the Capital Center.
Senior guard Mitch Westerheide (Ft. Loramie, Ohio; at right) led all scorers with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Fellow senior Michael Sommer (Celina, Ohio) also put up an impressive all-around game, posting 6 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists for Capital.
Despite a double-digit final margin, the Crusaders and Bishops played a close game. Right from the start of the game, a bobbled opening tip by Ohio Wesleyan lead to a breakaway dunk by Sommer to start a 6-0 run to start the ballgame for Capital.
After the Bishops came back to take the lead, the Crusaders finished on a 14-7 run after being down by six with 8:52 remaining to end the first half leading 28-27 at intermission.
Opening up the second half of play, Ohio Wesleyan retook the lead and built a nine-point spread early as Capital found themselves down 39-30 with 15:49 left.
After battling their way back into it through some defensive pressure and timely Bishop turnovers, the Crusaders knotted things up with a Westerheide jumper at the 8:18 mark to tie the game at 46 and force an Ohio Wesleyan timeout.
Following the timeout, two quick Ohio Wesleyan scores would spark a 16-5 run for the Bishops to end the game that would ultimately cost Capital the win.
Capital finished the game 21-of-54 (5-for-22 on 3-pointers) for 38.9 percent shooting on the night, while the visiting Bishops countered with 48.1 percent shooting.
The Crusaders return to the Capital Center to face the Purple Raiders of Mount Union to open up Ohio Athletic Conference play at 2 p.m. this Saturday, Dec. 1.
