As announced on December 11, 2024, Coach Damon Goodwin will be stepping away from the team to navigate medical related concerns. During this time, he will continue to recruit and advise the team from a distance. Assistant Coach Anthony Gholson will serve as Interim Head Coach for the remainder of the 2024-25 season. Anthony Gholson completed his eighth season as an assistant men’s basketball coach for the Capital University men’s basketball team. In August 2020, Gholson was tabbed the Athletics Diversity and Inclusion Designee (ADID) to aid in promoting diversity and equity in the department.
Since he first arrived in 2013, Capital players have been granted 15 all-conference awards, including two first team selections (Mark Minch, 2016 and Austin Schreck, 2019). Schreck was named to the All-OAC second team in 2018 and in 2019 was First Team All-OAC, OAC Player of the Year, OAC Defensive Player of the Year, D3hoops and NABC First Team All-Region, Academic All-American and an NABC All-American. Caleb Cox joined him as an all-conference pick and an Academic All-American that same year, accolades that came after CU won a share of the regular season conference championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
After his first season (2013-14), Gholson guided forward Andrew Bolka (second team) and guard AJ Dixon (honorable mention) to All-OAC laurels. Both repeated those efforts the following year. Prior to the 2019-20 season, Gholson was elevated to top assistant coach.
Prior to Capital, Gholson served as head men’s basketball coach at Heidelberg University, where he led the Student Princes to more than 50 victories over the course of five seasons (2008-13). Gholson guided Heidelberg to the 2010 OAC Tournament championship game.
Gholson was also the head coach (2000-04) and director of athletics (1999-05) at Columbus State Community College. While at CSCC, Gholson’s teams compiled an 86-36 record (.704 winning percentage) and a trio of 20-win seasons. The Cougars were ranked No. 1 in NJCAA Division II in 2003-04, when the team won the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference title for the first time in school history. He was named the conference’s Coach of the Year in both 2002-03 and 2003-04.
Gholson also held assistant coaching positions at Ohio Northern University (2005-08) and Urbana University (2004-05).
Gholson earned his bachelor’s from Ohio Northern in 1988 and his MBA from Bowling Green State University in 1995.
