Alumnus Andy Garcia ‘12 now enters his 12th season on staff with Capital Athletics. Since being elevated to take the reins of both the men’s and women’s golf programs, Garcia has led Capital to individual and team success on the links. He is now entering his ninth year as head coach of the men’s program and eighth year at the helm of the women’s program.

Garcia spent the first three years with the program as an assistant coach under Greg Kline from 2011 to 2014. In those years the men were one of the top-5 teams in the conference finishing as high as third in the conference championship.

Following Kline’s retirement, Garcia was elevated to head men’s golf coach prior to the 2014-15 season and took over the women’s program the following year. Since then, the men’s and women’s programs have been upward trending and rewriting the CU record books.

MEN’S GOLF

  • Capital placed third in the OAC during the regular season and fifth at the conference championship. Daniel Shafer earned All-OAC accolades as a freshman by virtue of his share of a ninth-place finish at the OAC Championship (2012-13).
  • CU placed second in the conference regular season standings and third at the OAC Championship. Capital finished just 10 strokes shy of the tournament title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship. Clay Rice, Daniel Shafer and Jeff Czerniakowski placed in the top-10 at the OAC Championship to earn all-conference accolades (2013-14).
  • In his first year at the helm, Garcia led the Purple and White to a second-place finish in the OAC Championship Tournament after heading into the final day just a few strokes out of first. Four golfers were named all-conference for their top-10 individual placements (2014-15).
  • Under Garcia, seven athletes have posted numbers to rank in Capital’s top-10 single round scores.
  • Cap tied the program’s lowest 18-hole team score (293) at Eagle Sticks Golf Club in both 2013 (as an assistant) and in 2016 (as the head coach).
  • Three of the top four 36-hole scores in recorded program history also come from Garcia-led teams.
  • Ten athletes sitting in the top-10 36-hole results also came during his tenure.
  • Twice, Capital men’s golf teams tied the 18-hole team low score (293) and five of the top eight spots in that category belong to his teams.
  • Capital broke the CU 36-hole team scoring record (600) at Zoar Village Golf Club (2015) and shot the second-best 36-hole score at the same course the following year (602).
  • Four of the top five individual 18-hole scores and each of the top six 36-hole individual performance come from those on Garcia’s teams between 2015 and 2019.
  • Logan Holbrook earned All-OAC honors three times in his career with Garcia as head coach.
  • Holbrook holds the program’s 18- (67, 2018) and 36-hole (142, 2018) individual low scores in CU recorded history.
  • Daniel Shafer is also a three-time all-conference honoree. That run began in Garcia’s final year as an assistant coach and spanned two years into his time as head coach. Shafer held the 36-hole CU record (143) for three years prior to Holbrook breaking it.
  • In the spring of 2021 season, Capital men's golf broke the school record for lowest 18-hole score after shooting a 292 at the Purple and White Invitational. The score broke a program record of 293 which previously stood from the illustrious 1980 season. Andrew Simpson paced the team shooting a 69, tying the third lowest score shot in program history.
  • In the fall of 2021, the men's program kicked off the year with two of the best 18-hole team performances in program history, shooting a round one score of 283 before scoring a 282 in round two at the Gatorade Intercollegiate at Zoar Village Golf Club. Both scores broke the previous school record of 292 by at least nine strokes. The combined score of 565 is the lowest team 36-hole score in program history by 18 stokes. Shane Murphy won medalist honors at the event, shooting a school record 138 over the 36 holes. Andrew Simpson was just three shots back with a 141, good for second-lowest in school history.

Garcia first arrived at Capital in Fall 2006 and golfed for four seasons (2006, 2008-11). An injury during his second year put a pause on his playing career but he resumed competition as a junior. He completed his playing career in Spring 2011, joined the coaching staff and simultaneously graduated with a degree in Psychology and minor in Health in Fall 2012. Garcia continues to compete in national tournaments year-round and serves as the head golf coach for Team Columbus, which competes at the Maccabi Games. In 2016, Team Columbus won the gold medal with Garcia at the helm. He also serves as rules official for the OHSAA district and sectional golf tournaments. Garcia resides in Columbus with his Dauchaund, Wally.
