Tennessee native and former NCAA Division I player Nick Newsome joined the Capital University football staff as an assistant coach in April 2015. He enters his third season as the Crusaders’ special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach. He also serves as the team’s recruitment coordinator.
In 2016, Newsome was instrumental in the rapid development of David Barnett, who as a freshman led the Ohio Athletic Conference in multiple categories and was tabbed Second Team All-OAC at season’s end. Barnett cracked into the program’s top 10 list after finishing with 877 yards receiving, eight-most in a single season, and 10 touchdowns, the most touchdown catches by a player in a season since 2011.
Prior to coming to Capital, Newsome was an assistant coach at South Gibson County High School (Medina, Tenn.) where he spent two seasons grooming quarterbacks, defensive backs, slot backs, and organizing the special teams unit. While at SGCHS, two players that he coached went on to sign letters of intent to play for an FCS football team.
Newsome spent the 2012 season coaching at the University of Tennessee at Martin (FCS) where he was responsible for developing tight ends, ‘H’ and slot receivers, in addition to serving as the assistant strength and conditioning coach. That year, the Skyhawks finished 8-3 overall and had signature wins against the University of Memphis in the annual Liberty Bowl and in their season finale against then-No. 23 Tennessee State University. While at UT-Martin, Newsome also served as a graduate assistant working with the linebacking corps where he coached one player that later went on to sign an NFL contract (Ben Johnson – Kansas City), another that is expected to be selected in the upcoming NFL Draft (Tony Bell) and one all-conference selection.
He has also had coaching stints at his alma maters Dyersburg High School and Austin Peay State University (Clarksville, Tenn.), where he assisted in recruitment efforts.
While a student-athlete at Austin Peay (NCAA Division I FCS), he was a four-year letter winner as an H-back and long snapper. He served as the team’s starting long snapper where he anchored a special teams unit that did not allow a blocked kick in 94 chances (18 field goals, 53 punts, 23 PATs) during his junior season.
Newsome holds a Bachelor of Science in Behavior and Health Sciences from Austin Peay, where he majored in political science and minored in secondary education. He graduated with his master’s degree in sports management from UT-Martin in May 2014. Newsome is also a member of the American Football Coaches Association and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He is married to his wife, Mary Beth.
