Mark Spencer is entering his first season as an assistant coach Capital Football in 2018 and brings with him a wealth of experience at schools at all levels of college football.
Prior to joining Capital, Spencer coached running backs at Kent State University for two seasons and became the school’s recruiting coordinator and special teams coordinator in 2016. Before joining the Golden Flashes, Spencer worked with running backs and wide receivers at Miami University (Ohio) from 2011-13. Three receivers earned All-Mid-American Conference honors at Miami under Spencer’s tutelage.
Spencer is familiar with coaching in the Columbus area, having coached wide receivers at Ohio Dominican University in 2010. In 2014, he worked with the Columbus Crusaders, a high school program for students who are home-schooled or attend a school without a football team. From 2008-09, Spencer coached running backs, tight ends and tackles at Youngstown State University.
He also has experience on the defensive side of the ball from coaching defensive backs at Iowa Wesleyan University in 2007. He also coached the defensive line as a graduate assistant coach at Bluffton College in 2006 and coached running backs at Bluffton in 2005. Spencer’s coaching career began as a quality control coach at the University of Cincinnati under Mark Dantonio in 2004.
In addition to coaching at the Mid-American Conference level, Spencer was a running back for the Ohio University Bobcats from 1991-94. Spencer, a Columbus native, attended Thomas Worthington High School and was a team captain in 1989, his senior season. Spencer earned a bachelor’s degree in sports administration from Ohio in 1995 and also holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Franklin University (1999). He obtained a Masters of Business Administration from Bluffton in 2007.
Spencer and his wife Toya have a son, Langston.
