Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Monzalvo’s Late Goal Lifts Men’s Soccer to First Win of Season

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Capital University men's soccer team found a goal in the 82nd minute of their road game at Franciscan University to emerge with a 1-0 result that yielded the team's first win of the season. Both teams are now 1-2 overall this season.

The match proved to be full of offensive opportunities on both sides as the hosts took 17 shots to Capital's 12 shots. Despite the high number of shot attempts, the edge in shots on goal was just 5-4 in favor of Franciscan. Of those five shots on goal, Capital goalkeeper Noah Thomas stayed the course and made all five saves.

Capital found the breakthrough on the scoreboard for either side with the game's only goal in the 82nd minute off the foot of Christian Monzalvo.  The goal marked the third of the career of the sophomore midfielder.

After the goal, both sides had sharp chances with the Barons testing Thomas twice and Capital's Luka Stojcev testing Aiden Miller in the Franciscan net.

In the end neither team could add to the scoreboard as the Comets escaped Steubenville with the 1-0 win – their first victory of the season.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH KIRK
"Tonight's performance was a strong rebound from a challenging first weekend against quality opponents. Franciscan did what they do well and played a relentless effort. Our group put together a 90 minute effort to be proud of for the three points. Of course we have much work to do, but we can take pride in our progress today as we move forward."

UP NEXT
Capital will see an extended break as their next game will be played on the road at Bethany College on Wednesday, September 10th. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m. in West Virginia.
