NEW CONCORD, Ohio - The Capital University women's basketball team hit the road on Wednesday, Dec. 3 to take on Muskingum University for their Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) opener. The Comets were able to fend off a late comeback attempt from the Fighting Muskies and take the 57-55 victory. Capital extends their win streak and moves to 7-0 overall and 1-0 in OAC play. For Muskingum, they see their record drop to 3-2 overall and begin conference play 0-1.
Capital would come out of the gates hot in this one, as a pair of layups from
Tahirah Ellis and a three pointer from
Julia Nash gave them a 7-0 lead three minutes into play. The Comets would cash in on four attempts from beyond the arc to take a 20-17 lead after the first quarter.
Similar to the first quarter, Capital would use an Ellis layup and a three point basket from Nash to grow their lead to eight points less than a minute into the second. The scoring would slow down, with nearly four minutes of scoreless play in the period. Two quick layups from
Kyah Ewing and
Samaree Perkins would give the Comets a 33-24 lead heading into the break.
A back and forth third quarter would end in a 45-35 ballgame in favor of Capital heading into the final frame. The Comets would stay on the attack in the first four minutes, holding a 14 point advantage with just over six minutes remaining in the game. Needing a late push, Muskingum would get just that, going on an 11 point run to cut the deficit to just two with two minutes left to play.
The Fighting Muskies would continue to keep the pressure on, converting on four straight free throw attempts to take a three point lead with just eight seconds on the clock. However, Muskingum would be charged with a very costly technical foul, giving Capital two free throw attempts and the ball.
Samaree Perkins, who has already led a late game comeback once this year, would nail both free throws, along with cap off the victory with a three point play with just one second left on the clock to give the Comets the 57-55 victory.
Perkins would finish the game with 19 points and 19 rebounds, the third time already this season she has reached that mark. The senior would also add six assists, two steals, and a block to her final statline.
Julia Nash would knock down four baskets from three, finishing the game with 12 points. Just a freshman, Nash already has reached double digit points in three games this season.
Continuing to dominate on defense is
Tahirah Ellis, who finished with five blocks in the contest. The Pickerington native now has a team-leading 16 blocks on the year. She would also have her best offensive showing of the year so far, finishing with 11 points.
