COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Capital University women's basketball team kicked off their season on Saturday, Nov. 8 with a non-conference match-up with Mount. St. Joseph University. In a back and forth contest, the Comets would ultimately come away with a 54-46 victory. With the opening day win, Capital begins the season 1-0. Meanwhile, Mount. St. Joseph falls to 0-1.
As to be expected in the first game of the year, both teams would get off to a slow start offensively. After nearly three minutes of scoreless basketball,
Julia Nash would get the scoring started with a three pointer. The first quarter would end with a score of 9-2 in favor of the Lions.
Quarters two and three would be controlled by Mount St. Joseph, as they outscored Capital 39-23 in this period of play.
However, in the final ten minutes of play, the Comets would dig in on defense, only allowing five points from the Lions. With six minutes left to play and down by seven,
Kendall Spreen and
Julia Nash would be the spark Capital needed, hitting two big three pointers to cut the lead to just three. Quickly after, two turnovers from the Lions led to two layups for the Comets, giving them a one point advantage with three minutes left to play.
The game would be put on ice by
Samaree Perkins, who closed the game out with seven straight points and an emphatic and one finish to seal the deal for the Comets. Perkins, who was tabbed a fourth team preseason All-American by D3hoops.com, would finish the game with 19 points and 19 rebounds. Her effort on the boards earned her a new career high, as her previous high was 17 in a game last season against Muskingum.
Also with a strong performance was
Tahirah Ellis. The junior finished with ten points and a team high four assists in the contest.
Julia Nash would lead the team with her three shots made from beyond the arc, finishing with nine points to go along with four rebounds and two assists.
