Comets Fall in Overtime Heartbreaker

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Capital University women's soccer hosted the Wilmington Quakers in the semifinal round of the OAC tournament for what would shape up to be a thriller of a match-up. Wilmington struck early, scoring in the 3rd minute to give the Quakers the edge. The Comets found their stride in the 23rd minute when Taylor Duff fired a shot just past the hands of the keeper to tie the game 1-1. The next goal didn't come until the 77th minute when Sarah Kelly sent a dagger into the lower left corner to give the Comets a 2-1 lead. With time winding down, Wilmington was able to score a clutch goal in the 89th minute to send the game into overtime. After a scoreless first overtime, Wilmington was able to seal the deal with a goal that ended the game in the 104th minute with a final 3-2 score.
 
The Comets finished the season 9-6-3 (4-3-2 in OAC play). Wilmington's win improves them to 11-5-4 on the year (5-2-2 in OAC play). The Quakers will advance to play Ohio Northern in the OAC Championship.
 
The Quakers started the game off strong, scoring in the 3rd minute by heading it in off of a corner kick. Capital recovered though, and was able to keep the pressure on. The Comets would tie the game up in the 23rd minute after an impressive shot into the top left by Taylor Duff. The Comet defense stayed strong for the remainder of the half leading to a 1-1 score.
 
Capital were the aggressors to start the second half, with back to back shots in the 47th minute and one in the 48th. Despite the strong offensive effort neither team would score until much later in the half. The Comets broke through the Quaker defense in the 77th minute when Sarah Kelly fired a shot into the lower left corner to give Capital the lead on the dual assist from Kasey Duke and Ava Spirk. Wilmington responded in the 89th minute with a clutch goal that would send it to overtime 2-2.
 
Overtime had fans on the edge of their seats. The Comets were once again the aggressors with four shots, but neither team was able to seal the deal. The second overtime started with a shot by Capital that was saved by the Wilmington keeper. In the 104th minute, the Quakers took a corner that would bounce around between the two teams before being driven into the goal by Wilmington. The final score after two overtimes was 3-2.
 
Taylor Duff and Sarah Kelly each had a goal for the Comets tonight.
 
Kasey Duke and Ava Spirk both assisted Sarah Kelly's goal.
