Women’s Hoops Outlasts CWRU in Overtime

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's basketball team outlasted Case Western Reserve University in overtime on Wednesday night. In what was an early-season battle of unbeaten teams, the Comets shook off a challenging test from the visitors to emerge 59-54 in overtime. 

Capital now moves to 3-0 on the year while CWRU drops to 3-1 overall. 

Throughout much of the night, both teams stayed neck and neck with the score remaining deadlocked at 10-10 after the first quarter and 20-20 at halftime. 

Again, in the third quarter, both teams remained close in score with CWRU finally gaining an edge and moving in front by two, 34-32. 

With all to play for in the fourth, gained an edge and went up 44-40 with 4:48 left on a 3-pointer by Kendall Spreen. From there, Capital got a free throw from Julia Nash to take them to 45 points, a total matched by the Spartans with 1:54. The game was then sent to OT knotted at 45-45. 

In overtime, Capital got a bucket from Tahirah Ellis to go up, but CWRU answered back. Despite falling behind 48-47, Capital got a free throw by Samaree Perkins and back-to-back buckets from Julia Nash and Perkins to make it 52-48, Comets. 

As the OT period continued, buckets from Kya Jordan and Ellis kept the Comets in front, eventually sealing it with a few free throws with the final reading 59-52. 

THE NUMBERS
Samaree Perkins led all scorers with 23 points and added 19 rebounds for her third double-double to start the year. The 19 rebounds also matched a season-high. 

Julia Nash scored 10 points, while fellow starters Kya Jordan (9), Tahirah Ellis (9) and Kendall Spreen (8) all rounded out the scoring for Cap. 

Ellis pulled in a career-high 11 rebounds in the game to support the work on the glass. 

Jordan led in assists with four dimes. Ellis added three in this category as well. 

Ellis also had two blocks joined by Perkins and Nash with one block as well. 

Jordan, Spreen and Kyah Ewing each had a steal. 

UP NEXT
Capital will stay home for their next game, battling Bethany College on Saturday, November 22nd with tipoff set for 1 p.m. Like tonight, Saturday's game will be played immediately prior to the Capital men who are set to tip 30 minutes after the women.
