COLUMBUS, Ohio - Capital University women's basketball hosted the Franklin College Grizzlies in a non-conference matchup. After a slow start for both teams, Capital caught fire in the second quarter shooting a perfect 10-for-10 from the field and scoring 35 points. Franklin was able to keep up, and after a run of their own were able to close the gap. With 15 seconds left,
Kya Jordan sunk a pair of free throws to put the Comets up five. Capital's defense was able to close out the game for a final score of 67-62 and a Comet victory.
The win moves Capital to 2-0 to start the season. The loss drops Franklin to 1-1.
The first quarter had a slow start with each team trying to settle in. Franklin pressed early, but it didn't seem to phase the Comets.
Samaree Perkins was the main source of offense for the Purple and White, scoring nine of the team's fourteen points.Â
After the quick break, Capital started the second quarter red hot.
Kendall Spreen scored three straight from beyond the arc, giving the Comets momentum. Capital literally could not miss going a perfect 10-for-10 from the field (six-for-six from three) and scoring an astounding 35 points in the quarter. Franklin was able to hang around though, as their defensive pressure forced nine turnovers in the second quarter alone. The Comets unreal offensive effort allowed them to go into halftime with a 49-35 lead.
Franklin decided it was their turn to score, going on a 14-0 run to start the third quarter that would tie the game 49-49. A pair of free throws from
Samaree Perkins ended the run and took away some of the Grizzlies' momentum. Both teams played solid defense to end the quarter 55-54 with Capital in the driver's seat.
Neither team could find any momentum in the fourth quarter. Every time the Comets would score, Franklin would find a way to answer back with a bucket of their own. Both teams continued to play great defense, forcing turnovers and misses. With time winding down, Capital found themselves leading by three and they had the ball. Franklin was forced to foul, sending
Kya Jordan to the line. There, she was able to come up clutch for the Comets - sinking both free throws and extending the lead to five. The Comet defense was able to stay strong and close out the game leading to a 67-62 Capital win.
THE NUMBERS
Samaree Perkins had a monster game scoring 30 points and fighting for 14 rebounds to secure the double-double -- her second of the young season already.
Kendall Spreen was the second leading scorer with 14 points on an efficient 40% from beyond the arc.
Kya Jordan showcased her versatility by scoring nine points, bringing in six rebounds, and leading the team in assists with six.
Julia Nash had a strong performance with nine points and six rebounds.
Tahriah Ellis showed her hustle on both ends, leading the team in steals and blocks with two of each. She also fought for six rebounds and had three assists.

Capital University women's basketball will host Case Western Reserve University on Wednesday, November 19. The game is scheduled to tip off at 5:00 pm.
