TIFFIN, Ohio – The Capital University football team traveled to Heidelberg in Tiffin, Ohio on Saturday afternoon, where they found themselves in a familiar position for the second straight week – falling by a margin of just three points at the final horn. This time at the end of the game, the score read 30-27 in favor of Heidelberg, just one week after Capital fell 24-21 at the hands of Marietta.
Capital is now 1-3 overall, while Heidelberg evens their record at 2-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Capital got ahead in the first quarter on
Ty Boughman's first career made field goal, a 32-yard try that made it 3-0, Capital.
The Comets then fell behind after three touchdowns by Heidelberg by the two-minute warning of the second quarter made the score 20-3, Berg.
The Comets did not go into the break empty handed as the defense came up with a crucial play to set up the Comets in excellent field position. First, the Comets'
Bryson Roberts intercepted Ty Poorman's pass and returned it 29 yards to the Berg 21-yard line.
There, Capital used two plays to bring the ball to the one-yard line before
Zion Solomon punched in the score to bring it 20-10 after Boughman's PAT.
In the second half, Capital continued to make it a game as Boughman's second field goal of the day made it 20-13. This time, Boughman was good from 21 yards.
The Student Princes got back in the end zone on the next drive to make it 27-13, but Capital stayed within striking distance. A pass break-up by
Diamonte Salley forced Heidelberg to punt at the start of the fourth quarter, giving Cap the ball back. There, Capital got the ball down to the Berg three-yard line, but like last week could not find a way into the end zone, keeping the score 27-13.
A quick 3-and-out by the Student Princes gave the Comets the ball with a short field. There, Capital needed just two plays to get into the end zone, scoring on a 31-yard connection from
Tyler Love to
Nate Younker.
On the next drive, Capital did well at stopping the Berg drive, but some untimely penalties moved the ball down field for Heidelberg, resulting in a Berg field goal with 1:46 left in the game, making it 30-20.
Capital didn't go away lightly as the Comets scored again, this time on a 29-yard pass from Love to
Wesley Armstead. The Comets' onside kick was almost successful before an offside penalty negated that, allowing Heidelberg to kneel out the clock with the final score 30-27 in favor of the hosts.
